Still trying to make sense out of all the miata talk. It boils down to this...are arm restraints needed with a hardtop & bar? If so, I take it from Evan's post that stock belts are fine. Thanks

Section 12.1 out of TTR on PDX
"Arm restraints are required on all open cars including open Targa tops, sunroofs and T-tops. The restraint system installation is subject to approval of the Chief Technical and Safety Inspector."
If you have a full top on the car then no. Always check on the event supps in case they update or add to the ref. rules.

Thanks Fvee90...I was beginning to think I had been blackballed

I have always understood no restraints needed with the hardtop in most events, but the excerpt Evan posted simply says convertibles require arm restraints and then "run a hardtop if you have one". Hence the confusion.

I'm about to order a helmet or two, and for $30 I'll probably throw a set of restraints in the order as well. Might as well have them I guess, then all the differing opinions won't matter.

How many sessions do you get at this PDX and what is the cost. I have been running with the ATL SCCA at Road Atlanta and stumbled onto this site. Is the there a link to the SUPS for this event?

The supps and cost($150) are on DLB.

As far as sessions initially it will be 4x30min sessions, but the last two years everyone(literally) has been done before the end of the day. And it's very possible the schedule will spread out some to allow more shorter sessions.

More shorter sessions = less track time because you have to clear the course more times per hour (3-5 minutes per session.) The only time shorter sessions make sense to me is NASA time trials, where the traffic's clear for a few minutes, but starts getting busy further into the session, especially for you fast guys.

I like 'em scheduled to start every half hour. That way, you get a chance to work through any trains or other holdups with the possibility of a true 25 or more minutes per session.

The only reason I like 20min ish vs. 30min is my car likes it alot better. After about 15min or so my brakes start going and heat soak takes over. And I know money will fix these things so if anyone would like to donate I'm game. It will probably stay 30min it may just do like last year and change according to the grouping, or in the afternoon according to who is left.

If you are running that FD, then heat also becomes a factor. There are a few things that can be done to help out. Aluminum radiator, put a downpipe in place of the pipe with the first cat, secondary water temp gauge (because the stock gauge is useless), seal up the gaps around the radiator, wire the radiator fans to a manual option (or pull the AC fuse and turn the AC on to make the fans come on), use Water Wetter, run the heater and put it on defrost, remove the two blocking pieces of plastic in the radiator opening in the bumper,

Re the brakes, replace the fluid with some DOT4 and bleed before every event, install SS brake lines, get some different pads (I may have some old Hawk Blues in the garage)

Well actually I have all that. Its not the coolant temp that bothers me it stays between 90-95 max. it's the oil temp. It gets up to 240 regularly and 260 occasionally before I start backing out of it. A 99 spec bumper with the larger openings would probably solve most of that.

As for the brakes they are ducted and I've been running Blues, but they still drop off a good bit toward the end of a long session. I've never had them boil or just completely go away but I do have to adjust my breaking zone. The stock brakes are just not large enough especially at TGP where you get very little time for them to cool off. The larger tracks aren't as big of a problem.

But now the plan is to get the DSR going and only run the FD at 1-2 specific events during the year.

What turbos do you run on your FD?? If twins are they still seq.??

Re the oil temps - do you have the single cooler that the base and touring came with? I redid mine to a Mocal dual cooler set-up.

My turbos are 99 JSpec. Also have the Efini Y Pipe.

I have the dual R1 coolers, mine was/is an R1. I've straightened the fins and made sure the duct to them is sealed.

Drive faster for longer and force more air thru them???

Or drop your shift point and keep some of the heat down in the engine.
