unfortuanatly you can't really compare the 2 tests. rp only does 2 tests, one of which isnt in the amsoil test the other of which give such high result i am slightly skeptical of it. in the amsoil test, amsoil is clearly superior, but i don't see it being 2-3 time superior to mobil 1. 2-3 times is the aprox difference in price. in a pure race car in a pure race enviroment where money is in abundance & tenths of seconds make a huge monetary difference, i can absolutly justify the amsoil over mobil 1. in our enviroment of penny pinching & trying to shave whole seconds off our times i can't. unless i see an independant/comprehensive test that shows rp is as much better than mobil 1 i can't justify that cost either.

as for the filters, i found this page...

to sum up, they recommend mobil 1, purolator, & wix. they don't come out & say it, but i seem to get the feeling that is their ranking order. from the other stuff i have read about filtration size i would rank the wix then mobil 1 then purolator.

Thanks for the filter link Bill.

Evan, I have seen one series of tests where RP was tested against AMSOIL, but I don't have the link anymore. I believe that RP was in the bottom 3 or 4 (of 8 or 10) in the tests, save for 1 category. However, this is speculation since I don't have the actual results to reference.

I have been looking specifically for AMSOIL vs RP vs ENEOS vs Mobil1 for a while, since those are the ones with the big claims (Mobil1 being the baseline for comparison).

Now lets not forget that most OE systems only run a small amount of the oil that runs to the motor at a time, imagine only half or a quarter of your blood making it back to your lungs at a time. If you really want filtration go spend the money on a cantex remote filter setup.

I will insert this warning.Yes it sounds quite impressive to boast the low micron number but keep in mind that almost ,if not every production car engines' oiling system employs a spring loaded bypass valve that can and will allow unfiltered oil to flow through the engine if the oil filter does not flow freely enough.

My advice ,which I have followed all of my driving life is to buy whatever the manufacturer of the vehicle uses. They have spent many dollars making sure the parts work well together .

In a pinch ,my next choice is purolator or wix.

Another caution to you guys running synthetic....you should still change your filters every 3-5k miles and certainly at the latest every 7.5k.Filters are just too cheap to take that kindof chance .To answer the OPs question ....in my opinion and experience...there is more emphasis on changing the oil filter regularly than the type that is used .

I agree Ricky. Even with the ~12k drain interval I could probably have with the AMSOIL fluid, I still change every 5k. The filter is changed every time.

Well I have a regular purolator on my car at the moment along with valvoline 10w30. But then again, my car is a rotary-so the way it uses oil, it would be financially irresponsible for me to put high dollar oil in the engine. But the tranny and rear end could benefit from it though. The trans just has regular gear oil and the rear end has mobil 1 75w90. I change my oil about every 2 to 3k because it gets dirty very quickly (common rotary trait).

From what I've heard, Fram has the LEAST amount of pleats out of any filter on the market. Me and a friend of mine used to know a guy that worked at Express Oil Change. They got bored one day when everything was slow and decided to cut open a bunch of used oil filters from various makes and models. The Fram had the least number of pleats, and believe it or not, their own house filter they used (el cheapo) had the most number of pleats, and that was even out of K & N and other "high dollar" oil filters.

I'd go OE, in my experiences I haven't had any oiling issues that way.
