  • The 24 Hours of Simtona...

OK, here be the deal. I have worked a bit on getting our old Daytona that we built way back in the dark ages of 2005 up and running and capable of handling 30ish cars. I've also got Our Riley/Fabcar DP's and GT's (GTO, Corvette, Porsche and Viper, Mustang and CTS-V in case there are any of the latter three that enter at the last minute)from various other mods all in the same build. This basically means we can run a real time 24 hours of Daytona in a DP right along side the actual race and keep track of how we are running compared to the real thing. All the while having multi class racing in a pretty darn realistic environment to add to the realism of the sim. I'm testing rFactor and a 30 car field in an actual 24 hour race and I've run into a few issues, but none that can't be worked around. I'll give GTR2 a go tomorrow and see if it is a better environment for this.

We can start our race right along side the real thing at 2:30 in the afternoon our time and when the sun goes down in real life it will set in the sim and the track lights will start to come up. It's really cool to see this and it also makes me one of the biggest geeks I know, but I really don't care.

There were a few folks that came over for the AutoCross that expressed interest in running this. I'm thinking if we have 4 or 5 others that would like to run it including myself we might be able to get by with running it all on the simulator. If there are more than that a dual setup like we had for the Autocross would be the best way to go. I'm pretty sure Matt's rig would be up to the task of running 35 cars at night. I do know that this build is pretty frame rate intensive due to combining cars that were not intended to actually run at the same time, so if Matt isnt coming and we need a second PC we would need something fairly powerful and running XP. (Dual Core, current gen GPU and a couple gigs of ram will get it done.)

    Who's in?

Well, here's the thing. You shouldn't have scheduled the banquet on the same night as one of the biggest races on the planet. I'll be here, if others would like to come over, cool. I think I can cover the stints that would need to be run while the banquet is going on and then folks could come over after.

They didn't, I don't think the date for the "SpeedSouth Super Solo Shootout" has even been announced yet so there is no way there can be a conflict...

How could I have forgotten about the SSS? It clearly trumps Daytona, Sebring, LeMans, Spa and Petit LeMans. Heck, in my book it's even more popular then the 24 at the Nurburgring! Thank you Darryl for setting me straight .

For those that would like to run this. It probably wouldn't be a horrible idea if you could pop by for a bit over the next week or two and get a bit of seat time if you don't have rFactor or GTR2 at home. I really want to do this right and we all need a bit o seat time. I'm also going to be doing some fuel runs in both sims so we can get our fuel and tire strategies set.

I will give the folks that would like to practice at home a link to the final build for this as soon as I get it tweaked.

              It's getting better...

I now have DP's, Corvettes, Porsches, a Speedsource RX8 and Ferraris in GTR2 circulating Daytona. Honestly, it's rediculously cool! I'm running 1:43's to 46's in traffic and I just got off the phone with a friend of mine that works with Shank and the lap times in sim are DEAD ON to what they were running over the weekend. Right now it's a 41 car field and I'm going to let them run 4 hours just to see if any cars drop out. I think GTR2 is the way to go with this.

I want to be in, I'll have to come over after the banquet and I doubt I'll be able to make it over for practice so if you need a driver I'm in. If you can find somone that can get seat time with you then thats good too.

We had a night practice, Fun was had....

Just a little look. This is going to be fun. I let the AI loose for 115 laps and they ran perfectly. I am going to throw a 12 hour test at them over the next few days and should have a final build for GTR2 if anyone would like it.

Definitely not Boo. Don't hate . The DP and the Vette are a blast to drive. I'm looking at making a GTO-R into a fake GXP just so we can have the Banner cars on track as well.

I've done a real time 24 on the playstation before. But it was with the LeMans 24 game and you had to use the PS2 controller (no wheel support). I came away from that with a new found respect for endurance racing. Using the VGT and a proper simulation should pretty much turn your brain to mush over the course of 24 hours. It's going to be quite darn rediculous me thinks.

Never said it wasnt. Show me the million it would take to run the 24 in real life and we can talk, lol.

I just ran 53 laps at night around Daytona in the Banner GXP-R and it was awsome. Only problem is now that I'm out fo the car, I can't sleep! Too hyped up, lol.
