No, you wouldn't have to start with the school, but it's the easy button for getting your TT license. If you've never done a track day before then you'd have lots to do if you want to take the school. Time trials is about setting the fastest lap on a closed course while still driving in traffic. You need to have your head on a swivel and be aware of things going on around you like flagging stations, traffic, checking your mirrors and learning the line around the track. Taking the school will allow you to get a SCCA Time Trials License so you can do Hillclimbs as well as other level 3 (Track Trials) events at places like Road Atlanta, Nashville Superspeedway etc..Originally posted by seducksauce View PostI've never done any kind of time trial stuff before, but I'm interested. Would I have to start with the school or something?
First off you'll need a 4 point rollbar in your car and 5 point harnesses as well as a fire extinguisher. Your safety equipment consists of a Fire proof Nomex drivers suit and SA rated helmet and nomex gloves, socks, underwear and if you have a beard a nomex balaclava. Your car will have to have a logbook issues to be sure the car conforms to the rules and guidelines set forth in the Time trials Rules. There will be an inspection and logbook session at Element Garage this Saturday at 10am. The entry fee for the school is $250 at this late date and consists of you getting to know the flags and on track "etiquette" for a lack of a better term and how to share the track with others.
Most people start with a PDX (Performance Driving Experience) and move up to Level2 (Club trials) then move up to the more competitive Level 3 (Track Trials) and Level 4 (Hillclimbs) are for those of us with the desire to race up a hill at full speed with trees and rocks lining the road and leaving no room for errors.
We have a level 2 at the Time Trial Event March 19-20 at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway.
We can take novices but prefer the drivers to have some experience in driving in a performance setting. Your car needs nothing more than good brakes, Tires and a inspection from a qualified service tech and the driver only needs a current M or SA rated helmet, long sleeve shirt and long pants with shoes covering the complete foot. (No Sandals)
We (ALSCCA/TVR) would like to have a PDX event at TGPR next year or later on this year but we need drivers willing to commit to a day or two at the track.John W8

Well, I don't have "formal" track experience so much, but I'm not new to performance driving. Also, as silly as it sounds to some people, I've done extensive simulated racing with other drivers on the track so I understand track "etiquette" well. I know it isn't quite the same, but I know how to play with others
I don't have the proper safety equipment to do the school, but I'm quite interested in the Level 2 TT.
I might just wait a little longer before I get into it good, save my money for this time and get into it a little later. I'm still debating on being a corner worker for this event too.
I could certainly commit to a couple PDX days later in the year however. I would honesty prefer to get a PDX day in before jumping into the field competitively.Nick Stone

Working is the best way to get a feel for how it goes. You are able to put it all together when you get "your" track day. Before I started PDX and TT(TT was then called Solo 1), had worked a couple of Talladega events, and for me it was a great way to get started.Originally posted by seducksauce View PostWell, I don't have "formal" track experience so much, but I'm not new to performance driving. C and I had a great time working as always. Grid was not as full this year but we still enjoyed watching all the great racing. And of course the worker laps rocked! Thanks so much to all the drivers that stayed to allow us to have a little fun.Sara {Novice Chief} SM 11

Mucho Appreciation to all the workers who stepped up to cover a station, we had a few early morning bugs on corner station numbering but we all gotta learn somewhere. A big thanks to the TVR crowd for their dedication to Time Trials and to the drivers who took a chance on a fun weekend and had one. Thanks to Bobby Bitterman for being the TT Chief Instructor and Ricky Ragan for being the L2 Chief Instructor, Eden Powell for the Registration duties and Steve Conrad for the T&S work in the tower. Thanks to George Bugg and Mark Rothermel for the Stewards work this weekend. And thanks to all the volunteers who did the necessary work of covering the corners and tower duties. Sara and C on Grid, Cholewa on Start and Chuck on F&C Control. John Clark, Lyle Cain and Sean Yoder for their instruction for the L2 drivers. Your support of this clubs activities is appreciated dearly. You make the day go smoothly and efficiently.
Mellow Mushroom was great, after 5 years of being the TT Chair I finally made it to the Mushroom!
New Track records were set and some old ones were broken. TGPR is a great facility
and challenging for the driver while still being fun to drive. I wish more folks would've
come out but I had a great time none the less. A big thank you to the David and Katrina Upchurch and Lawrence for the use of the track.
Now what did I do with my hoodpins?....John W8

What a fantastic weekend!!! It was great to finally reap some of the rewards after having been preparing the car all winter. A big thanks to Bobby Bitterman for being the student instructor. A big thanks to John W8 and Ricky Regan for their help and input!!! I don't think there is a better place than TGPR to get your feet wet whether its Time Trials or Level 2 Club Trials. Its so much fun seeing how you progress from the first session to the last.
Can't wait til the next event!!!Mark K
