  • Newbie - introduction

I have decided to learn how to drive ...

I have also bought myself a fun vehicle (although not very forgiving). I have a 1988 Carrera that was prepped for F class PCA racing. So it is mostly stock, but I believe based on reading the rules I would be ASP class. I also gathered from reading the rules I will need a doctor's note to participate as I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for Lymphoma. This is over in June (hopefully) so I am setting my sights on participating in late summer and fall. I am using that time to read and learn so please point me in the right direction. I would love to come by an event to watch if that is permitted. I think I could learn a lot just by watching others and talking to other drivers.

I look forward to meeting some of you and getting smoother/faster in my new toy.

    Mike

    First off Welcome!

If you are looking for something to do this weekend there is a Time Trial at the Talladega Grand Prix Racetrack. There are usually a lot of the main people associated with solo out at this event. It would be a good place to came and meet with people who have been doing this for a long time. Although the just started charging people $5 to get in. If you can't make it or just don't want to come then there is a solo next Sunday the 26 where you can come meet some folks and watch some action.

cathy will be THRILLED about this. she gets some competition in bsp. she has a white '87(?) 911.

come out next sunday the 26th. that is the next auto-x. plus at an auto-x you can almost always get rides from the friendly folks. i'll be in the black miata w/ lots of tire smoke behind it ask me for a ride, i won't be fast, but it won't be boring. it's @ the birmingham race course (the dog/horse track). 1st car is usually off sometime after 10a. there is a lunch break to swap run groups & we get done by 5p at the latest (usually much earlier).

i can't waight to see your car. my short list of cars that i want to (realisticly) own includes an '87-'88 red 911 targa w/ turbo look (whale tail, wider fenders etc..)

I was wondering why you would want that over a real turbo. Then I remembered, your head would be over the windshield as it is so it would have to be a targa

My avatar photo is not my car, but similar. I will take some photos this weekend and replace it with one of my baby. In reading posts here everyone seems great and I look forward to getting to know the gang and learning from them.

I have not previous car track/autocross experience, but I do have experience on motorcycles. I have stopped my track activities on bikes, so I am looking forward to starting it with my new (to me) Carrera.

My first thought is how do you keep track of where the course goes As I watch some videos I think I would end up taking a wrong turn. I guess that where walking the course a few times really helps.

Woohooooooooo! Another 911! I LOVE IT! Welcome!! Definitely come out and watch the next AX. You will love it. As for the "sea of cones," that was my biggest fear before my first time out. And it is valid! I have gotten lost a few times. AHEM SHUT UP YALL. I think most drivers have taken a wrong turn or two especially when starting out (and sometimes long after? chime in yall!). Track walk helps A LOT, and looking ahead as you go thru.

Don't worry - you'll get it. As folks have said, you can get rides and that will give you a good feel for how it works. One of my favorite things to do is to have other drivers drive MY car with me riding along - I think I learn the most that way. And this is the coolest bunch of folks - no shortage of adventurous, talented drivers willing to take a new-to-them car out on the track to see what it/they can do, and to ride shotgun & giving some coaching on the fly. SO much fun!

If you register in the Novice class (read about it in the rules), you will get a guided course walk before each event, and they'll hook you up with somebody to ride with you if you want that. I hate that I'll have to miss the next event or two, but I will be back soon. Until you're ready to drive, come on out and have some fun!

Mike, welcome. I wish to say good luck with the chemotherapy. I know someone at my church who is going through that, and I know just how incredibly hard it is! You'll be addicted to Solo in no time. I've been doing this since Nov. '89. Still love it. I'll be in the old '88 white Integra. Feel free to come see me for a ride.

+1 on that, my uncle went through it and told me he would never go through it again. As far as the course goes, you learn to look ahead, way ahead. That way you don't get lost. It's one of those things that isn't as applicable on the track. I'll be out in a black STi. It looks fast and sounds fast, but, the driver is really slow. I'd be glad to take you for a spin.

Hi! Welcome to autocross, it's a great sport - I got addicted to it about 3 years ago! I hope you can make it out to our event on the 26th... I know everyone on here has already offered you rides but I'll be in the silver Celica if you want to ride along. Ride along with everyone you can, it really helps! And the "sea of cones" starts to resemble more of a course
