  • Safety Steward? What's that?

If you've been to a SCCA Autocross event anywhere in the country, you have seen a Safety Steward. Safety stewards are responsible for making the events safe for spectators and competitors alike and making sure we are taking care of the insurance requirements for the event.

At this time we have maybe 4 safety stewards in our region and we need more. Had it not been for Jeff and Roberta Wetzel coming to our last event, I would have been the lone safety guy. Meaning I wouldn't be able to participate as a driver.

There are times when we can't make it to an event and if there are no safety stewards in attendance, there can be no event. Take a look at some of this information and let me know if you have any questions regarding becoming a safety steward. We could use a few more to make sure we are covered for all our events.

    Thanks!

Here's an incentive: Safety Steward on duty doesn't have to shag cones.

These days, those rules don’t always apply. With an abundance of novices sometimes downed cones get missed. I prefer the incentive of knowing you’re helping to make sure the events are safe.

John, thanks for posting this. I agree with you. As 1 of the 4, it stinks when we can’t make it to an event (like this past weekend), and it puts the whole event in jeopardy. We definitely need more SS’s to cover our events.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Perhaps offer free event admission to event Stewards as an incentive for people to get trained?

That's an option to consider. Before the great site debacle we discounted entries for the setup positions and included the safety stewards in that. We participant numbers coming back we hope to be able to reinstate that policy soon.

I've always thought the incentive to be a safety steward is that you're helping to make sure the events are able to go on as well as providing some level of safety for the participants and spectators. If no one was to take on the safety stewardship, the events wouldn't happen. That alone seems a good enough incentive to me.

As for me, but this doesn't seem to be enough motivation for others to become stewards.

Rod is right. We'll be adding discounts for specific worker positions soon. Money generally motivates folks, so I wouldn't be surprised gets more of a response.

We are about to start up another season and we still need people to volunteer to get a safety steward license. It's easy work but someone has to be the responsible one at events. My time as Safety steward has allowed me the opportunity to write up 3 incident reports. In 8 years as Safety steward. We are about providing a place for safe events. It's not hard. Sign up and get you shadows in. I won't be able to come to all the events this year so we need some members to help the events by getting that license. It's necessary. We cancelled events last year due to not having a safety steward available. What's keeping you from being part of the team? Step up!
