  • Three runs and done

    CSP is running a three runs and done format this year for trophies and year end points. This should get some of us ready for divisionals as well as nationals, save a few dollars on tires, and maybe even help out the two driver cars on swapping out since you can skip a run or two. You can still run the full five or six runs, every thing after 3 gets counted as a DNF. So what other class wants in on the fun?

    Years ago I argued that everything after the first three should be fun runs. I've had conversations with well-known multiple national champions who don't pay attention to the results after the first three runs.

    I always felt that the true nature of Solo, figuring out a course you've never seen before and doing your best in three runs, goes away if you run more than three times. After that, it's more like road racing, where you refine what you've learned about the course, rather than figuring it out in the course walk and on the fly.

      That format kind of kills it for the newbie's though...(i.e.-myself) The "Pro" CSP guys can have at it...lol. The way I see it, even if your a pro-it's gonna take you at least one run just to figure out the proper line, so esentially your only getting two timed runs. I can see doing 1 practice "timed" run and then 3 runs and done...

        Since this is a voluntary thing, it shouldn't affect the CSP noobs. Basically, T&S will just DNF runs from the CSP competitors that want in on the 3 and done idea, and the rest will have all 5 or 6 of their runs.

        To the CSP guys that only want 3 runs, you can just stop after 3 runs, or you can let start know when they call your number to us so we can DNF that run. this will help with keeping points straight. I don't want any complaints when Vincent makes up 3 seconds on those extra 2 runs and pwns you guys though ... =)

          Just noticed in the Dixie Entry List that Brian Johns is driving a CSP car out of Louisiana. I think that is the same car Rick Ruth was co-driving last year.

          I'm glad he isn't co-driving in B Stock.

          And you don't need to formalize 3 and done. Josh and I do it all the time for bragging rights at home. Where else would it matter?

            With only two or three in a class I guess it would be easy to keep up with, we wanted it to count for year end points so we are going to let the T&S do the math for us.

            I've got a feeling C$P is going to be very competitive this year, I just got of off the phone with a nameless driver that has spent more than Lyle and John put together on his car. I know it's not how much you spend but when you add his talent to a well set up car things are going to get interesting.

            I would love to see the whole club do this, everyone would still get the same number of timed runs as we do now. The only difference would be everything after 3 would be scored a DNF.

                I'm up for 3 and done! I'd like to start going to some nationals events, so I figure I need to get in the habit...

                  I hate namelessness so going to say Mark McWilliams is going to be hard to beat.

                    You walk the course several times to figure out the proper line. At the Divisionals, Tours, and Nationals you don't have the luxury of throwing away a single run. Sometimes you manage to collect a cone or worse on the later runs so that means you need to stand on that 1st run.

                      Interesting thoughts and views from everyone. Maybe one day when I get R-comps I can join the realm of CSP and be competitive. Maybe then I can say "I only need 3 runs to beat all you guys!" <JK>

                        My take on 3 runs...

                        Before 1st run- if possible, watch others drive course and learn from their mistakes and successes.

                        First- Drive appx 90- 95% (warming up tires/brakes and exploring traction). Try lines I should take (from overanalyzing the course when walking). After run, see places where I could accelerate more or carry more speed. See places where I braked too early (or pushed too hard braking too late). Tune up line compared to what I thought it should be. Get a game plan for my second run.

                        2nd run- Drive 95-100% of what I think is possible. Use info from 1st run to achieve that. Be a little cautious (the 95%) in the places where I am most likely to hit a cone or miss an apex. I am shooting for a clean run that will be fast enough to win. If I hit a cone, I drive the rest of the course 100-105% to explore the last places to gain time (since a coned run will not be my best run, it can still help me with my next run).

                        If I had a clean fast run, I will push the 3rd run 100% in every place and try for the "perfect run". If I cone, I can still stand on a good 2nd run.

                        If I cone the 2nd run, and do not have a good clean timed run, I can try 2 approaches...

                        If it is a 2 day event and this is the 1st day, I have to get a good clean timed run. I will usually drive 95-100%, concentrating on the coned areas being clean and a little slower, and doing the rest of the course clean and well. You have to be in the running for the 2nd day.

                        If it is the end of the event, and I am still behind, I drive 100% the whole course and pray that I am clean.

                        I am not sure how others approach the 3 run and done......

                        PS- Watch as many fast drivers as possible, especially in questionable line areas, to gain wisdom!

                          All out on all runs, safe on 3rd if first two are dirty for 1st day
                          Repeat day two

                          Note to self - Drive faster on day two
                          I led two Tours after day 1 last year and ended up 2nd.

                              i am not a pro by any means, but, I do things bass ackwards. I over drive my first run, and slow down where needed.(this also lets me get heat in the tires,I do follow the all out rule when I cone though)
