Ervin, you can usually look up the specs of the tire with the manufacturer and see if shaving is recommended. Same with heat cycling. But you can do a decent heat cycling on your own. Not as "perfect", but the main part is getting them to temp and then letting them sit for a week or so with no weight on them.Matt W.

I ran the star specs this last year and loved them. They have a stiff sidewall, good grip, and great treadwear. I've heard the rs-3's are better on dry traction, wear quicker, but are cheaper. This season, im aiming for two new star specs, but may do rs-3s for the price.Jeremiah Hodgins

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

If I'm not mistaken, Yoder's Mini was on rs3's at the barber event, and it was pretty sticky until they got too much heat and just died. I can't comment on them over star specs since I ran 245's on the rabbit which weighs more, and sean runs 205's or something small on the mini which weighs considerably less.
They felt good none the less.M. Cholewa
Because they heard I liked my name, so they put my name as my name so I could have my name in my name... all the time.

"too much heat" and rs3 usually doesn't fit in the same sentence. Ben and I had no such issues even with the three 95+ degree autocrosses we had this summer. The star specs will get greasy in extreme heat however and benefit from spraying.Rod H

Rod, it can be easier to overheat the fronts on a FWD car. That course we ran at Barber was pretty tight so with too much throttle I can see that happening.Matt W.

I understand, but those two terms are considered by many to be mutually exclusive. If he overheated RS3s, no other street tire would have stood a chance.
Oh, and the two terms I refer to are "too much heat" and "RS3", not "I" and "understand"Rod H

I thought the XS took heat the best? Operating temp is like 219* where the rest are in the 195* range. I guess the RS3 could heat slower ... no clue really.Matt W.

If you look at the results from nationals last year (2011) in ST and STS you see a trend in the trophy list. The Green Egg will respond similar to those cars on those tires. In 2010 there were three brands. Autocrossers are pretty much lemmings, buy what you want.

Hankooks in 245/40-17 are out of stock with a 6-8 week waiting period. I have some Star Specs on the way. Toyos are just too darn expensive.
If you went to a National event then you will meet some amazingly adept drivers. It's true they are generally recruited to drive very well prepped cars but they would be good in most any ride. Walking a course with Brian Johns, Matt Glagola, Darrin DiSimo, Jason Collette and dozens of other fine drivers is a learning experience as they visualize the placement of the car. It's even better when they share their thoughts.
I respect them and their skills.

I think he meant the drivers take contingency money into consideration when they chose which tire to run. Sometimes he...well he's mike."Its an incurable disease not to leave well enough alone." -Ricky
