  • Time to call in reinforcements!

After looking through the forum it seems that everyone is stepping up their game so figured I would do the same. Since I can put out more torque with a 1/4" ratchet than my honda engine can, I need to call in the reinforcements!

Picked up this never used Garrett T3 tonight from a friend for $100. The rest of the parts will come together as I find them. Maybe by mid season it will be done. For now the suspension is first before powah!

Oh ya, I need a set of Koni yellows for my civic if anyone knows where some are and a ITR rear sway bar.

Just so you know, your turbo isn't a Garrett. The only way it can be is if it says Garrett on the compressor housing.

But either way, 100 bucks is cheap! Let us know how it turns out.

I thought Garrett was the company that made the AiResearch turbos. I haven't kept up with the forced induction thing much. Can't decide if I want to boost this current engine or build a NA b18 that I have. The NA vs boost delima is killing me. Boost makes a lot better tq but don't want to wait on lag. I figured couldn't go wrong for 100 bucks. If I don't use it on my civic, can always just throw it on one of my mustangs.

Not to my knowledge....AirResearch is actually a knock off brand.

Ah interesting. Guess you learn something new everyday :P

When you search "airesearch turbo" in google, TurbobyGarrett.com comes up. And after reading this wiki article just figured they were one and the same:

Mine is spelled AiResearch like in the wiki.

yes, AiResearch IS Garrett. The company started out back in the late 30's or 40's as a few companys that made Turbo Props for airplanes. Eventually AiResearch Manufacturing, Garrett Manufacturing, and Aircraft Tool and Supply formed Garrett AiResearch. Then eventually it turned into Garrett Turbos. I think Garrett is now owned by Honeywell.

I have a very similar AiResearch turbo on my BMW.

Thanks guys, I was thinking they were the same but only built 1 turbo car so I'm far from an expert on them haha.

What size turbo is on your BMW? This one is .48 on the exhaust side. How is the power response? Or maybe I can just catch a ride at the testntune

the volvo has a 42/48 on it right now, and it's a quick spooler with great low end. I think john's is a 60/63, but I'm not sure.

48 will be make up plenty for your lack of low end responsiveness.

I'll have to check on that turbo size for you, but def snag a ride with me. My motor is an inline six so I was looking for a good midrange torque setup. I autocross and plan to hillclimb and TT with the car, so big upper range power was not what i was looking for. I think the turbo is great, exactly what i wanted. It comes in very quick and the torque is great. Just grab me at the TnT.

The one I got is Water cooled, so it added a bit of work, but I'd be willing to help you with what you needed.

Cool, thanks a lot you two. Cholewa, I may hitch a ride with you too at the TnT if you don't mind.

I want to hit the hillclimbs and TT as well but it will be a wait and see deal. Working on Saturdays tends to get in the way of important stuff :P I didn't want the big upper range power either, I want response. This turbo isn't water cooled so that makes it a bit easier.

I'm also drawing up a few designs to try and make the charge pipes as short as possible. Also, about what diameter charge tubing is sufficient for this size turbo?

The volvo will not be at this event unless by the grace of god my new turbo shows up on my doorstep tomorrow or thursday.

                        TDICROSS will be had.

I am using 2.5 inch charge pipes. I'm not sure that I would go any bigger then that with this turbo. Matt Williams would be your best point of contact on figuring out the proper flow for your engine. In my research on the turbo before I built mine, 2.5 inch pipe was used on the 6 cyl engines, and 2 inch pipe on the 4 cyl engines.

Yeah, I'd be happy to help with charge pipe and exhaust designs. I'm pretty god with that stuff. I'm not so good with compressor maps and such though so can't help much there. My knowledge there is pretty application specific to the Evo.

And Cholewa ... that might be a tough road to start down. Once you use that torque for evil doings it will be hard to go back to the Volvo.

The volvo has comparable torque, and right wheel drive, and no traction controlling systems whatsoever.

The volvo puts much more of a grin on my face than the tdi ever could. Unless I'm at the gas station.
