  • Street Touring rule change for 2011

Just a warning if you run in a Street Touring class. In case y'all don't follow the monthly Fastracks or the national forums, there has been a big debate going on all year regarding the aero arms race started under the "body-kit allowance" in the ST ruleset. Well, the verdict is in and the proposal found in the November Fastrack as going to the SCCA BOD for approval is the deletion of rule 14.2.F (quoted at the end) which means no non-stock wings, hoods, front lips, body kits, etc. in any of the ST classes.

I make the big assumption that this may not mean much at our local events, but that will be a question for next year's Solo Chairs. What it does mean though is that some of our ST regulars would be illegal if they go to a divisional/national event...cars like Griffin's Civic and Derrin's Focus. There is not enough clarification at this point to know if my car is legal due to the skirts on the sides, because said package was a dealer-install option.

I have aspirations of running tour events hopefully as early as next year, so I am following this with much interest. I wanted to post the news as a warning if any of our ST folks with similar goals were thinking about dumping money into appearance mods during the off season. If so, just say no

    ====================================

"14.2.F. Addition of spoilers, splitters, body kits, rear wings and nonfunctional
scoops/vents is allowed. The intent of this allowance is to accommodate
commonly available appearance kits, and replicas thereof, which
have no signifi cant aerodynamic function at Solo speeds. Body kits
are limited to bumper covers (including modifi ed OE bumper covers),
valances, side skirts, and fender fl ares. Standard parts may not be
removed except for the substitution of spoilers, rear wings, bumper
covers and valances. Rear wings must attach only aft of the rear
    wheel centerline.
The allowances regarding wings and spoilers only allow swapping
like for like if the original device was not an OE option as confi gured
by the factory, i.e. a spoiler for a spoiler or a wing for a wing. If a
vehicle is available without a wing or spoiler from the manufacturer
    then either can be installed.
Surface area of all splitters, spoilers and rear wing (see 12.9) shall
not exceed 5 square feet in sum total. Substitution of rear spoilers
or wings must retain any original third brake light functionality unless
otherwise equipped. No underbody panels may be added or substituted.
The drilling of holes for the purpose of mounting these pieces
    is permitted."

Does Derrin not run factory option parts? His is a SVT car, so I kind of assumed it just all came on there ...

Maybe. there isn't much different on a svt focus and his may be okay. I know there are a couple that come out with extensive kits.

I think we'll probably go with our usual ALSCCA solution to a classing issue for 2011...."if nobody in the class has a problem with them running what they have, then let 'em run"

The ST class was basically created so that "street racers" could come into auto-x and find a nice and welcoming class for them to run in. The rules allow for larger wheels and tires, lowered suspension, intake, exhaust, chip, interior modifications like a racing seat, aftermarket steering wheels, etc. If no one has a problem with someone running a big, outlandish body kit in ST, then we'll let 'em run in ST.

Our ST class has become one of the largest (if not the largest) classes for ALSCCA and I think that's great! People have also jumped to that class bc of having to run on street tires and the associated drop in expenses, but hey...it makes for some good fun in the class. So when next year rolls around, we'll be mindful of the changes to the "national" reclassification, but we'll keep whats working for "alscca" as long as nobody has a problem with any of the cars that are running in that class.

            Thanks for the update Rod!

Rod, do you know if there will be regular registration for the Saturday, November 13th event or is this the charity event? If so the registration link on the solo front page is to the old website which no longer exists. Let me know if you have any info regarding this as the 13th is not too far off! Thx

Charlie, the last event is on Sunday Nov 14th and I believe registration usually goes live two weeks prior to an event.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

I expect Derrin's good to go. I don't remember seeing any body parts that aren't factory parts for the kind of Focus he has.

Does anyone have a link to some of these discussions about ST competitors abusing the 'tuner body kit' rule to get real aero advantage? I didn't find anything pertaining to this on scca.org's forums.
