  • Rally-X setup questions.

I'm about to get a '91 Mazda 323 FWD for $350 from my brother in-law.
I've been interested in Rally-x but don't want to mess up my nice cars so I thought this Mazda might be a perfect opportunity to give it a go and if it blows up oh well!
I don't care about being competitive at all, I just wanna throw some dust up and have fun (ie. I'm not putting a lot of $$$ into this at all)

    So here goes my list:
    1) I'm assuming SCCA has a rulebook for Rally-X? Are the classes set up pretty much the same as Auto-X?
    2) I've read skinny tires are better but what is a decent medium performance off-road tire to start with? Lets say the equivelent of the Dunlop Star Specs or Falken 612s, but for the dirt!
    3) Is a roll cage necessary?
    4) If, lets say, I gut it out down to a seat, steering wheel and dashboard with maybe some fiberglass bodywork what class would that put me in? (Because I don't care about being competitive, I just want to completely destroy the resale value of this thing!)

Ahhh the joys of new toys!

Welcome, I can answer some of your question.
    1http://cms.scca.com/documents/Rally%...ross_Rules.pdf
2 all the people that win seem to run on firestone winterforce tires http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes
    3 no cage needed
4 you would be in Modified 2wd or M2

Dont worry to much about getting your car setup just bring it out and run it, you get a better under standing to what you need to make it faster then a 100 hours in the garage.
Hope to see you at the next event on the Nov. 7th

If it runs and will pass a safety inspection (like autox) plan on getting a taste 11/7.

What's the wheel bolt pattern on that? If it's 4x110, I can let you borrow a set of wheels with rally tires on them.

EDIT: According to the Tirerack, you're 4x100.

        Thanks guys!
I won't be able to do anything with it until next season, I'll be out of town until Jan for work. Plus now I will have 3 cars to work on over winter break so I'll have plenty to do.

Right now the car is drivable but needs a tune-up and a new hood, it got crunched under a pick-up bumper/towhitch!

And no matter what I'm going to gut it completely because I've always wanted to do it and I don't care at all about re-selling it to a college kid afterward so.....

        and all that!

OverD when your gutting it, you might want to leave glass in, if you read the rules it would make your life easier. If you Rallycross you'll find out its the most fun you can have in your car with pants on.

I wouldn't worry about the hood as long as it:
              -closes and latches
              -you can see around it

Follow the advice of the other guys, bring it out, get it dirty, then develop a plan if a plan needs to be developed at all.

NONE of these cars are show cars and I hope I'm not offending anyone here, but most are pretty beat down. Bring it and drive it like the $350 car it is. Modify when stuff breaks!

With that out of the way, maybe you can make it next weekend.

Also thoses 323 are light, nimble & easy to toss around.....good base car to start with. Give it a good shakedown & go from there...

                Thats the beauty of Rallycross
