I'm trying to learn violin so I can do that thing some justice, but after a year I still sound like a tone-deaf cat trying to sing.

It takes a good year or two of solid practice to get out of the "screeching cat" zone on the violin. Long, slow learning curve. I've taught children & adults for years - would be happy to do some coaching. How's your driving, maybe we could trade
