Here's something that has bothered me for quite some time about working events with the SCCA.
Why don't we offer training outside of an event? Lack of interest? Or is there a lack of interest in working because people don't feel qualified to work?
The National SCCA and their local affiliate clubs want you to help work events that the local affiliate sanctions. There are a small but dedicated group that usually do help out but a great many that don't. Many think they aren't qualified to help out and don't want to be "in the way". SCCA tells us that no experience is necessary and that we'll show you what needs to be done and off you go. In order to gain more experience you work more events. Here locally that means 1 SCCA road race a year. If you travel to other regions you can get more experience but not a lot. I'm curious why there couldn't be an SCCA worker "University"? Provide online classes for the training of workers in all aspects of race event positions. At least when you volunteer, you'd have a bit of knowledge coming in. I've attempted to follow up with a scrutineers license but lack the time/resources to travel for experience. An online class would help, along with online tests then a pre-determined number of events under your belt as a apprentice "XYZ" worker and boom you got a license. Just thinking this could help.
From a drivers perspective I cringe everytime I hear someone say that flagging and communications needs warm bodies to man a corner. I hope that when someone volunteers to work a corner that they realize there's more to it than that. Upside down and on fire comes to mind. My hope is for experienced workers and not just warm bodies holding down a corner.
