Forum will no longer be utilized!

After facing many challenges with utilization of this forum for many years, the board voted on the evening of 1/12/2026 to stop use of the forum in favor of the modern, more effective means.

Most of our general club organization will now be coordinated via Discord and results from our events along with schedules and announcements will be hosted on our main alscca.net webpage.

What does this mean for the old forum? Well, in short we are going to stop using it. This has been reviewed several times in the past few years, and there has been a desire for some of more tenured members of the club to have the historic content preserved. In an effort to preserve this content, it was discovered that we could not simply export the content to be placed in a modern website. This forum will now become an archive only forum and will not be monitored. If you wish to preserve any of the content, this is your time to search the pages to find it. There is no promise that this content will remain available forever with the fragile nature of this forum.

  • E36 sunroof delete rules

Sooooo the sunroof on the M3 is gonna cost waay more than I want to spend to fix it. The solo rules say I can convert as long as a model with an no sunroof option is available on the same line in Appendix A. Does anyone know if the sunroof was an option or standard?

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

My understanding is it was an option. It's a unicorn car, very few made, but you could get an E36 M3 with no sunroof.

If you're running BSP you can update/backdate also which allows you to run parts from the "lightweight" M3. So no sunroof, aluminum doors, etc.

Per the official SCCA ruling, the only way to legally convert a BMW to a non-sunroof configuration is to literally cut off the top, replace it with the entire roof from a non-sunroof car, and also replace all of the associated trim bits in the interior. That's for Street, ST, & SP at least. Removing a sunroof and replacing with a blank panel is NOT a package conversion. That's why I never did it.

Oh yeah, what Rod said. I forgot about that, you do have to replace the entire roof, not just a panel.

What's wrong with the sunroof as it is now?

There's lots of broken brackets and rails that are worn to the point of needing replacing. They were nicely sandwiched in before I took it out to troubleshoot, and don't believe I can imitate that exact placement (and dirt) to reinstall it. What if I were to use some fancy, not rigged up at all (but definitely secure) bracketry to at least hold the panel in the sunroof frame and reinstall the unit?

If the bits and pieces are there, I don't think there's any problem with it being functional or not.

You're only going to run into a potential problem if you remove the sunroof cassette and replace all that weight with a simple blank panel, imo.

Get you some junkyard parts! There has to be a few E36 M3's in junkyards across the country.

The donor may not even have to be an m3. Perhaps any e36 sunroof, or any e36 coupe

I have a can of that somewhere that I got for free at a NASCAR race if you need it ... Or if you need to seal up the screen door in the bottom of a small metal boat.

Check around on some of the BMW track forums. Maybe someone removed the sunroof on their track/race car and has all the parts you need. Also check with Bobby Bitterman, he may have those parts laying around.

just an fyi, after some more cleaning and a thorough inspection, I ordered just the slide feet instead of the whole repair kit. Also, got some PTFE WD40 to grease the slides. It just less complicated than replacing the whole roof and since I had it out, it was impossible to put back without fixing or rigging. I'm also not just saying this so nobody checks it at tech.
