I really didn't notice much of a difference between my manual rack and Josh's depowerred rack.

goodridge makes a short and long version of a steel banjo bolt in your size. It is about half way down the page.
Not sure why this page didn't come up on searches. Thanks!

I am not too worried about having to muscle it around while parking. How much caster are you running?

Its only an issue when trying to turn the wheel and the car isn't moving. And plus, no power steering, less drag on engine, more power, more fun, more winning.
I don't think horsepower will be an issue for me.

Duly noted. I would love to just buy a manual rack and not mangle mine, but my subframe is designed to mount an NB rack. I have an NA rack and test fitted it to be sure and it doesn't fit.

I'm running at 4.3 degrees caster IIRC. A little less than typical, but I gave up a little caster for more camber, not to reduce steering effort.

I was at 5 deg per side, so not much different. Who knows what it will be with the new subframe.

I just checked it out. I am not worried about getting another power rack. Those are easy to get. An actual NB manual rack at a salvage yard would be quite unique. I heard you shipped yours from Texas.

When/if you depower the rack, you must remove all PS fluid from the rack or it will be more difficult to turn. Lubrication is not done by the PS fluid. Remove the fluid and plug the lines...you do not have to loop.

I searched for manual and there were several listed. You would need to call to make sure. If it was legal in SP I would rather have a depowerd rack.

I will definitely drain the fluid, but I have heard that looping the lines allows air to be pumped back and forth.

It looks like I can get a new power rack easily enough that I might as well cut up the one I have.

Tanner, a point to ponder. (I race IT so I'm most familiar with those rules) "Fluids are free) from the GCR. Air is a fluid.

Why am I not surprised that the GCR considers "air" to be a fluid....

The rack will still pump any fluid back and forth when I turn the wheel, so I can't simply plug the holes unless I take the rack apart and chisel the piston off of it.

There used to be a great write up on how to de-power a PS rack on Flyin Miatas website. It involved completely disassembling the rack to get all the PS fluid out and greasing up the innards with Redline CV Joint grease. It was plugged and not looped. So maybe the piston was removed. I don't remember. I wish I had downloaded the write up when I saw it. The FM site has changed quite a bit over the years.

Yeah that is the write up I was referring to about chiseling the piston off the rack. I need to call superfastmiatas again and have a chat about how they made the steering work in their NB1.

EDIT: Called the guy who made my oil pan. He suggested carefully bending the line that sticks up back towards the firewall.

Well, I got the engine in and the lines are all up in the way. Manual steering here I come.
