Forum will no longer be utilized!

After facing many challenges with utilization of this forum for many years, the board voted on the evening of 1/12/2026 to stop use of the forum in favor of the modern, more effective means.

Most of our general club organization will now be coordinated via Discord and results from our events along with schedules and announcements will be hosted on our main alscca.net webpage.

What does this mean for the old forum? Well, in short we are going to stop using it. This has been reviewed several times in the past few years, and there has been a desire for some of more tenured members of the club to have the historic content preserved. In an effort to preserve this content, it was discovered that we could not simply export the content to be placed in a modern website. This forum will now become an archive only forum and will not be monitored. If you wish to preserve any of the content, this is your time to search the pages to find it. There is no promise that this content will remain available forever with the fragile nature of this forum.

  • MIG welding stainless exhaust

I'm welding in a resonator on my obnoxious exhaust on the daily driver.
Any advice or recommendations of what kind of shielding gas to use?
    Tri-mix 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, 2.5% Co2 or 98% Argon, 2% o2?

Do they make a flux cored Stainless wire?

It all depends on the type of stainless, if it is stainless at all. Most exhaust systems (factory) are made of 409 stainless steel. Its a very low grade stainless compared to the traditional exhaust grade stainless, (304,321, etc). 409 will actually rust over time, but it last significantly longer than the mild steel exhaust of 30+ years ago.

What brand and material resonator? What type of exhaust material? Yes you can MIG weld it with plain old MIG wire. It won't be pretty, but it will be strong enough. Everything is slip fit in Muffler land, so you won't lose the pieces should they become disconnected. If it is 409 stainless you will be fine. Its not the best for 304 stainless, but will work in a pinch. TIG welding is a better option but not absolutely necessary.

I tend to TIG weld all my exhaust work, but then again I have all of the equipment to back purge and properly weld. I tend to MIG weld mild steel and junky stock stainless systems

The exhaust is a Magnaflow Cat back that came on the car. I'm not sure what flavor of stainless it is. The resonator is again of unknown stainless. I'll give it a shot with my plain 'ol wire and see if it sticks. I just want this raspy-ass-sounding exhaust quieted down some.

          Thanks!

You should be able to MIG it with standard wire, but the joint will oxidize.

The Magnaflow parts are all 409 stainless. You can MIG it and it will work fine. If you would like, paint the weld with high temp paint to keep it from rusting.

I declare this raspy-ass sounding exhaust fixed. The plain mild steel wire with 75/25 worked great. Everything welded up easy. Thanks for the feedback.
