  • "Stock" suspension rules

From what I understand (barely) in the stock classes, you are allowed to upgrade your shocks/struts to aftermarket products, such as konis or bilstiens. I don't have a problem with that. What is confusing to me, is to what extent are you allowed to go when you "upgrade"?

Obviously there is a difference between koni reds/yellows/sports/etc and again a difference in the bils hd/sport/etc. Does putting a more aggressive shock change classification? or can i go all out and stay stock?

Any shock that fits the car that has the perches in the same place (or can be put in the same place) with only two external adjustments is legal (more or less)

Read 13.5 of the rules and it should be clear.

I believe a lot, Clay being one of them, follow the thought process of overshocking the car. Making the shock do more than it was orginally intended to.

I think what Evan is referring to is "jacking down", google it and I'm sure you'll come up with something.

Basically the spring is supposed to control the roll/travel of a car. The shock controls the spring, dampens maybe, disapates heat, and something else. Well when you overshock the car it doesn't roll as far as it did before. Thus the shock is doing part of the work of the spring.

will that not lead to early failure from over-exertion?

read what you just said really closely Micheal. Why would this shock be anymore overexerted using the stock spring than the stock shock/strut?

Stock class does not allow for actual spring substitution. BUT, the actual spring is not the only consideration of "effective" spring rate. Effective spring rate can be increased by a stiffer front bar, stiffer shocks/struts (compression and/or rebound), and stiffer tire sidewalls (by construction and/or increased air pressure). I have never had to replace an OTS Koni yellow, or a custom-valved shock/strut. But I can tell you that it makes a world of difference... and is a great tuning tool! But I cheat also (some people say)...

you definitely do cheat, but I think i'm going to join in on the shennanigans and get some koni FSDs.
