  • Pull-A-Part Question

Despite the fact that I'm a cheapskate, I've never made the trek to Pull-A-Part, so I don't know how it really works.

They say you pull the parts, but then there are no jacks allowed. What if I want a big ol' automatic transmission? Do they pull the part, or how does that work?

The one that I have been to had an "A" frame type of lift / hoist that rolled around the lot. This would be available if you were to want to pull an engine or transmission. I believe they also had pallets to set it on and a fork lift would come get it and load it into the back of your truck. You still had to do all of the work yourself to disconnect / cut any lines, cables, bolts, etc.

I would call whichever yard you are going to before you leave to confirm how they handle the larger items.

The one over off tallapoosa has a similar hoist for pulling engines, or they'll bring the fork lift and pull the car up and help you a bit. They've got wheelbarrows for you to put stuff in.

You walk in, pay a dollar, let them look in your toolbox to make sure you aren't smuggling goods, ask them where the miatas are (they do a decent job of keeping track of where cars are before getting crushed), snag a wheelbarrow if there are any left, and get to work.

When you're done, you wheel it back in the building, pay the nice lady, and leave. OR you can pay people to do it for you. There's usually a few folks out front willing to work for some bucks. Not sure what kind of work they do though, but they are generally nice enough.

And the best part, go to the tamale stand when you're done and get some.

They are usually between the fully restored 69 Camaros and the low mile Ferraris.

No, I'm sorry. You're wrong. There were no Miatas there when I went and picked up my fully restored 69 Camaro and low mile Ferrari.

I can't say I've ever seen one at the PaP either, but you never know.

Easy enough to check.... you can check inventory online and it'll also tell you what date the car came onto the yard.

I'm not looking for Miata parts. I need a couple (yeah, count 'em, two) Dodge van transmissions. I think the biggest problem might be confirming that any particular variation of these items will work with my applications.

Should have the model stamped on a plate on the transmission. You'll just need to wiggle under the van to take a peek.

Chuck be aware that their return policy is that you get credit towards another purchase if your trans is no good, not your money back. You may want to call Palmer Bros. in Irondale, they specialize in used and rebuilt Mopar parts, before doing the pull a part thing? just FYI

Thanks, this is the kind of info I really need, because I don't feel like (actually, probably can't afford) to have it rebuilt or replaced with a new one.
