  • The 255s fit the car, but not my tire trailer

So the 255 tires I got fit on my E36 M3 just fine. However they won't fit on my trailer in it's current configuration. The wheels are too tall, ~24.75" diameter, to lay side by side like my old E30 wheels. They are also too wide, ~10.25" overall width, to get them 4 wide on my 40" wide trailer. The two outside wheels end up sitting on the trailers fenders.

Any suggestions from those with wide tires on how to make them fit on a 40" wide x 48" long harbor freight style trailer?

I have a black tool box that I'd also like to keep on the trailer if at all possible. I've found a few ways to fit all four wheels but the box won't fit so it would just be the wheels on the trailer.

Here's the trailer I bought with a picture of the box: http://www.alscca.net/community/show...hlight=trailer

    Any ideas are appreciated!

I might have to build up something like this to get the wheels above the fenders:

could you put a spacer or chock on the bottom, to get the wheels to sit at an angle? So then, if they point towards each other, you could do a sort of herringbone stack.
Left pointing down to the right, right pointing down to the left, left on top of that, and right on top of that? Or do it so they til the opposite direction and if the angle is great enough they should fit snug... maybe

Yeah, and actually I could fit 3 of the wheels on the trailer with the box and then put the 4th in the trunk. I'd just like to keep it all on the trailer if I can. I've got a few ideas I"m going to look at and one way or the other get it all wrapped up next weekend.

Remove fenders on trailer move tires to the front and box to the rear. There's more room in the front of the trailer than the rear. OR see Clay McCools set up on his trailer. He built up a spacer to lift his wheels even with the fender tops.

What's keeping you from moving the posts a bit wider and forward? Sorry can't see what it looks like without the tires on it.

Well I might be able to get the tires to fit in the front. However the more I move them forward the more tongue weight on the trailer. I'm trying to even out the load on the car as it seems some people have problems with the spare tire well cracking where the hitch mounts on the E36 cars. It's bolted through on the spare tire well, not attached to any bumper supports or frame rails.

I was hoping to get the tires on the back of the trailer as they are the heavier load. The axle on the trailer is already offset so that if the load is even the tongue weight will be correct. If I put the heavy load on the front I will have an even higher tongue weight due to the offset of the axle.

Could you flank the tires right down the middle front to back, and then put the toolbox on one side and jack/stuff on the other? That way the weight is even front to back?

In that case I'd put the tires in some bags and put them in the back seat with tool box stuff in the trunk, have a trailer sale and be done.

But I just bought the hitch and wiring harness!

Maybe I should have bought bags for the tires but getting them in and out of the car is a pain. After having a trailer I don't think I want to go back to that option. The hitch mounting is the same setup as on my E30 and I didn't have problems but I thought since I now have a tire size issue I'd try to straighten out the weight balance.

I've got an idea to try but hard to explain on here. If I can get the tires at just enough angle to clear the fenders I think I can get them on the back in stacks of two like in the picture and the box on the front. I'm going to take some measurements and see if I can't build something up this weekend. Thanks for all the ideas.

Will one of the tires fit in the toolbox? Three should fit between the fenders tread-down (car direction) right? The other could go in the car even... that would solve tongue weight. Not real elegant but workable.

Yep, that could work. Three on the rear and one in the trunk.
