Kid's E36 auto transmission just died.... How hard is it to swap transmissions? I found one near Atlanta for $500ish. Tempted to just sell the thing for $750 or so.
Luckily, you can swap transmissions on an e36. It's one of the last models with an external control module. As far as physical labor, it's not much more difficult than any other rwd auto trans. A lift definitely makes things easier.
As far as worth it.... If the car is in otherwise good shape it may be worth it. If the car has 200k+ miles and poor interior and/or other faults you'll probably do better to part it out.
Note: if you decide to part it out, most control modules are vin specific and can't be swapped between cars. This includes cluster, abs, dme, egs, etc.
