Can anyone give a recommendation for an Exedy Clutch for a Miata?

My DD has the squall of doom coming from the trans/clutch/throwout/pilot bearing area. According to the vehicle history this might be the original clutch. 110,000 miles.

All I've ever used was ACT or SPEC but I plan to go cheap on the DD.

Exedy look like a good stock replacement setup. Anyone disagree? Better options?

Want to go cheap, you may want to look at this...Can't vet for the quality, but it seems like plenty of folks use them.

Miata parts for sale/trade - FS/FT Brand New Excedy Clutch 1.8 - Bought this back in October when I got the car (actually before it arrived) because it had clutch problems. Turns out it was just the clutch MC needing to be replaced. Now I want to go FI so I will need a better clutch. It's a brand new Excedy clutch kit...

I used an exedy clutch on my integra years ago. It even saw some auto-x abuse and survived well. Not a miata, but it had miataish power. I wouldn't have any objections to putting one in my street car these days.

Exedy makes a lot of OE clutches, including the Evo's stock part. They make good stuff.

I've got an Exedy kit on the way. $148 plus free shipping from CheapA$$Clutches.com or something like that.

One site had the same kit for $98.00 but were out of stock. How inconvenient.

No problem with the one I put in my Integra, just don't slip it too much

I finally got around to installing the clutch in the Green 2000 Miata aka "DeeDee"

The problem is a bad pilot bearing. The clutch was is fairly good condition but since I'm going in I'm not gonna reuse a potential weak link.

I like working on my own cars. I always have, it's somewhat relaxing and it lets you know the condition of the piece you paid good money for. Friday evening I got the car up on jackstands and started unbolting stuff to get ready for the trans removal. I got inside the car and removed the console and removed the shifter. The shifter turret had just barely enough lube in it to be considered lubed. WTF? Both shifter boot were torn and that explained the lack of gear lube in the turret. It had slung out. Need to get new shifter boots.

I then crawled under the car to get busy removing the stuff below. Drained the gear lube from the trans and looped a belt under the tail of the trans to support it when the PPF comes off.. I was amazed at how much sand is under this car. It was a South Georgia car which explains the sand. I finally had to put on goggles to keep the grits from my eyes. The exhaust came off easy. Next out was the drive shaft. There will be a new unit installed in the coming months since the u-joints were dry and kinda crunchy as well. The PPF was absolutely disgusting. Gear lube had been slung on the PPF and then sand was stuck to that making it a big greasy crunchy mess.

Next off was the starter and the trans bolts. Have I said yet how much I hate it when some one uses an impact wrench on trans bolts. Well I do. It's not necessary and it's a pain to break them loose under the car. I rolled the transmission jack in under the car and guided it in place and popped the trans loose from the engine.

Holy crapola! The inside of the bellhousing was covered in a combination of gear lube from a bad front trans seal and engine oil from a bad rear main seal. Yuck! and it had been that way for a while. More new parts. This wasn't the first replacement clutch on this car but I was irritated the whoever did it before didn't bother to clean stuff up or replace the pilot bearing before putting it all back together.

I removed the the pressure plate and flywheel to get to the pilot bearing. Problem found. The bearing was locked up solid. The inner race wasn't even able to move. The rear main seal was leaking like a sieve as well as the flywheel bolts didn't have any sealer on them so oil had a pathway out to the clutch. After some extensive clean up, I replaced the rear seal and installed the newly resurfaced flywheel and pilot bearing and aligned the new clutch and pressure plate.

The following morning after some extensive de-greasing of various parts from under the car I started reassembly. The transmission jack I bought at Harbor freight many years ago is a God-send. Jack it up the right height and angle and it all goes together like butter and toast. I then spent a few hours bolting, torqueing and lubing and finally get to the point where you can fire it up and see if it all works.

YAY! We have forward motion! I now, at least, know the condition of the car as well as an example of how it was cared for before I got it. It's now clean, degreased and in better condition than it was when I started.

Thanks for the offers to help but there just isn't enough room under a Miata for more than one person. I really gotta get a lift.

Its the special cheetah print Flywheel. You know how John is with his Miatas. He likes them bright and flamboyant.

I wonder if that is from a little oil getting on the clutch surface. The car has had a unidentifiable stumble at off idle acceleration since purchased. Maybe it's a slippery clutch. I couldn't see any contamination on the disc though.

Have you seen this car? It's about as non-flamboyant as a Miata can get.
