what is the torque rating on standard NA miata differential?

There are two different rear ends in an NA, the 1.6 rear is pretty wimpy (small ring gear). The 1.8 rear does pretty well for turbo cars.

The RX7 diff and the Miata 1.8 diff has the same size ring gear so the limit would be the same.

Not the answer to your question but a little help non the less.

I am going to guess they are rated Insufficient for Kilgore Applications

This is probably true. I'm just trying to find an easier application than fitting a Ford 8.8 in the back.

I know there are some hefty RX7 Turbo II, and was thinking if they can get some good torque numbers out of their motors, and the Ring gear can hold up, then it may work for our app.

From what I've found the ring gear on the late model NA and the Rx7 is a 7 inch ring gear, as opposed to the 6 inch that was early model. The Ford 8.8 is obvioulsy another inch almost 2 bigger. Now, from experience, I know that bigger is better, and 2 inches can make a big difference , but I'm still hoping that the 7 inch will work, because it will save me a huge amount of fabrication and money.

Steve Patterson destroyed a 1.8 Torsen with a measly 300 hp of Turbo Miata powahhhhh!

I'm sure an LS1 will do it twice as fast.

ugh, okay. sounds like my original plan will have to be put into motion.

so what do most guys use that run the turbo miater?

flyin miata and monster both use the ford 8.8, which is an obvious choice considering the use of it in the explorer and cobra (both irs axle), but they are also typically pushing well into the 400 hp/tq range. I wont be in that range, I am planning to be in the 300 hp/350 tq range. I would think that would be typical Turbo Miata/RX7 territory.

I know I can find all this information on the interwebz, but I hate fumbling through forum BS to find decent information. So first hand knowledge, or those of you that actually know the guys that did this in the past, would be my preferred source.

Most of the folks I've seen with Turbo Miatas will just run the factory stuff until it breaks and replace with more of the same but dial back the boost.

Another option is the Cadillac CTS-V diff. That's what Flying Miata has used on some of their V8 Miatas.

yeah, but that is less accessible then the Ford 8.8, considering there are WAY more of those around then the CTS-V, and the cost is tremendously less. Along with there being alot more LSD, gearing options for the 8.8.

I didn't say it was a better option. I remember reading somewhere about the CTS-V diff can be bought new for less than $1000. Shoot Darryl has more than that in in his OS Geeken.

Why don't you just get the swap down, then swap rear ends from your explorer and miata when you get to the track in true Kilgore fashion.

Tow the explorer with the miata.

You can't look at what Steve Patterson has broken...he breaks everything, twice. Robert Russom (okay maybe steve patterson) built a V8 Miata and could proably tell you how to make it happen if you have contact info.
