  • Ballast for alignment

I know this isn't completely technical, but it's the best category fit ...

I need to get my car realigned with Ballast as it's a bit off being aligned with no driver in the car. Firestone will not let me sit in the seat while it's being aligned, which is fine. But I want to put some ballast in the car to get it closer to my weight in that area.

Last time I put like 5 30lb bags of sand in the back floorboard. It worked, but those bags were fragile and sand got everywhere. I'm looking for something else that's pretty cheap and compact but maybe not as messy.

I'm thinking a few 60lb bags of concrete/cement mix. I feel like that would be pretty compact and the bags are made a little better. Depending on the size, I could maybe soak them in water and then there would be no dust once set, but they would be hard and possibly damage door panels or seats.

    Anyone have thoughts or suggestions?

Good call. I was thinking wrap in duct tape, but this makes more sense.

I looked up the concrete bags and they are 60lb at 17"x15"x5" basically. Seems more compact than the sand. At $3/ea it's not expensive. I might do that with the trash bag trick.

Or better yet, go to a shop that will let you sit in the car. There is a guy on the TAC forum that everyone is praising. He has a new Hunter system at his home, supposed to be very qualified, and they said a 4 wheel alignment is $60.

I had an alignment done in a Miata where I was allowed to sit in the car. Fully expecting to see the numbers change, I was surprised to see that they didn't. Since then, I don't worry it anymore.
