  • DIY Alignment or good shop

    Now I know this is hypocritical considering I do alignments at work all the time, but our lifts are too tall for a lowered car. I am also considering running some negative camber since my car has become strictly an autox car for now, but I still drive it too the autox, so nothing extreme. I was watching some online diy alignments and I seems legit, but I was wondering if 1. Anyone had the equipment or 2. if anyone new a good alignment shop near the Anniston/Oxford area for lower cars.

    Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
    Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

    I've got all of the stuff to do an alignement, but gave up on self alignments a while back. Without a dedicated car mounted string setup it just takes way too long.

    I use Firestone for their lifetime alignment service. You just need to find a shop that will set it to your specs. Not all of the managers like to do that.

      If I had access to alignment machines I would build ramps to get my lowered car onto said machine. Trust me the at home stuff can be a pain in the arse. It can be done and I have some stuff to do it with but getting everything dead nuts level can be a challenge. It takes more time to do that than align the car. I aligned my racecar and have aligned the CSP car a couple of times but I also had the CSP car roll off the wheelstands nearly crackin my noggin.

        John is right. I use a clear tube for a water level and shim the tires with 1/4" planks to get it level. I use a laster level on a little adjustable platform to align the strings. for me the most time consuming part is finding the center of the suspension and then marking the floor for measurement.

        the process is ...

        1: Level car
        2: Find and mark center in front
        3: Find and mark center in rear
        4: Measure out form center on both sides to get marks for strings
        5: set up strings
        6: center wheel
        7: measure fron string to wheel
        8: adjust
        9: repeat 6-8 as needed, then move to rear.

          I'll be getting an alignment rack very soon. Its a big chunk of change, but it can pay for its self.

            The Camaro fits on the rack at Expert Tire, and one of their managers is a one-time autocrosser.

            I had Byron's Escort on the rack at Cobb's, in Oxford. They were willing to work with me on alignments.

            Both cars were stock height, at the time, though.
