miata motor replacement

in case you didn't see my "want to buy" post...

A friend needs a motor for a 99 miata. His mech has a 100k example for $800 & says he will install it for another $800 + $200k more in parts. I have no idea...is this reasonable?

Seems high to me but I do my own install work.

$1800 for a 100k engine of unknown origins.

Why not rebuild what's there?

I've asked the same question John. The problems stem from a crank keyway failure which "messed up the engine" but I don't have details. I drove the car...it seems solid but the engine felt muzzled. No power and no willingness to rev at all.

Tom at the Parts Group was talking about starting to do engine installs on customer cars. Check with him on Monday. He might work a better deal.

I can give you some figures.Mitchell labor guide says to R&I the engine with necessary parts swapping such as wiring,fuel and exhaust and such ....9 hours with AC is what it comes out to after averaging the differance between auto and manual trans.

9 hours multiplied by a typical labor rate..($85) equals $765.00.
If you intend on doing w/pump ,Tbelt,hoses,and such ...$200.00 would be a low estimation
The motor price is a bit high.i wouldnt give more than $500.00 for a motor with more than 60k on it ,but there again if your mechanic is sourcing it from an outside supplier...the motor is probably costing him about 500 and then he is adding his markup (totally understandable)

All in all,it sounds pretty inline with the mainstream if he is supplying all of the parts and labor.
