  • Used tires to destroy at autocross

Does anyone know a good place around Birmingham to get used tires?

Until my on-course driving habits improve, I can't justify getting nice, new tires for the purpose.

If it matters, the play wheels I've scrounged up are 15 by 6.5. Tires with a sidewall ratio between 45 and 60 would fit best.

I'm about to pull some 185/60/15's off of the Box if you want them. Super crappy though and probably tall for your setup.

Actually, that size would be real close. Stock Foci with 15" wheels run 195/60's.

Those should suffice for what I want to do. I'll reward myself with good tires once I learn to stop trying to nose-drift my car.

When is your deadline on this?

Oh, sweet! Are they wider than 185? If so, I will probably need to accept your offer over TouringBubble's. If I'm reading this wheel's markings right, the 185s would have been a stretch to fit on a 6.5 in wide wheel.

According to Tirerack, 185/60 would do well on a 6.5 inch wheel. It's the widest wheel for that tire size. My 225/50s could potentially rub, but you're welcome to test fit one. What 15's did you get?

Lol ... you're in Chelsea. I'll ask to have the old tires put back in the car afterward and just bring them back to the house. You can come by and get them whenever. I live right behind McDonalds off of 280 in Chelsea.

I couldn't find any direct-fit Focus wheels this time. These are from a '98 Contour SE. I tested in the junkyard on a Focus, and the pattern and hub bore are right. The offset and backspacing looked acceptable, but we'll have to see how they do on my car.

What width are your Centerlines? 15x7?

Thanks, Bubble. That's quite a short trip for tires, given that I went to Louisiana to find some $15 wheels.

Centerlines are 15x7 +42mm offset. Offset will be the key.

I borrowed one of the 225s from Erik yesterday, had it mounted, tried it on, and it (barely) fit!

Looks like the Contour wheels have less offset than my stockers. I didn't have strut contact front or back and it looks like I may get away with it from a fender rub standpoint.

Thanks for saving those 185s for me, Bubble! I'll still come haul them off, if you like.

Sorry. I've already committed to (picked up and had mounted) a set from Focus, here.

                            Thanks, though!
