The Hankook's have a 140 wear quotient and the Kuhmo's are a 180. Plus the Kook's have a 225-45-15, which looks to me on paper to be the superior performance tire.
treadwear is largely a marketing device. The Star Spec is also either 180 or 200 but feel significantly softer than the kumhos. I have driven both on my miotter....raced the star specs all year in 195/50-15 and did one TVR event on Zac's 205/50-15 kumho's.
On the other hand, the star specs are dead and Zac's kumho's should last another year easy.
The tests and national results seem pretty conclusive in that the toyo and hankook are the best of the pack, followed by dunlop, kumho, bridgestone in that order. Particularly in the 15" sizes.
And the Hankooks are great tires and a good choice for a lighter car. For the Mazda they would be a better choice. For the Civic, I'd go XS.
The XS take a lot more heat than the Hankooks ... just look at the optimum temps for each. The Kumhos are at their best at around 210º ... a good 20º over other tires in that class. If you get tires that hot, then you'd obviously want the XS as others will be greasy by the time they come in to prime.
225/45 is a lot of tire to get hot in an autocross on a lightweight car, even if they require less heat. It might be easier to get the smaller tires up to temp. Plus it's much easier to find wheels for the 205s.

Why do I keep racing these weird cars?
Why can't I just get a miata and be happy?
