  • Corner weighing

Would love to have my old red baby cornerweighted. Would there be any interest in a corner weighing party before the Road Atlanta TT event?

If the party is close by I will be glad to help. I have intimate knowledge on how to do it wrong and how to do it right.

Would be willing and able to come to Birmingham. I know that 45 minutes below Montgomery is out of the question. The car has never been cornerweighted and was just wondering how much difference that would make for a ham fisted driver.

Oh, and definitely would love to have your help Darryl. The right way of course.

Scaling out a car isn't that hard from my experience. You can buy a set of scales for $600-$700 for a cheaper set brand new.

Guessing from the response there is no interest. Everybody must have their cars corner balanced.

I don't really know if it is possible to do corner weighting if you don't have an adjustable sleeves on your suspension? Is it? What I don't know about it is filling a book somewhere....

You can set your left/right and front/rear percentages but if you don't have adjusters then the only way to change your cross weight would be shims between your spring and what ever it rests on. Even then the changes would be so small unless you used a lot of shims which I wouldn't advise. Just setting your side to side and front to rear would be a big help if you don't have adjustable suspension

I don't know the first thing about corner weighting but I'm up for anything that will make my car better.

Wally, if you are interested in coming up, then we can get the club's scales set up and do a corner weight and balance of your car at Element Garage. Element Garage allows for club members to utilize lifts during the weekends or slow times during the week. The best option is to have an idea of your own how you want your car set up, or have some one set the car up for you. The charge is $80 to use the scales for corner weight. Let me know what your schedule looks like and we will set things up.

My only suggestion for anyone who is going to scale out there car is that you better know beforehand how you want your car set up. If you want 50%/50% front/rear and 50%/50% left/right, then be prepared to start removing parts on your car or adding weight somewhere. It takes far longer to get those percentages correct than it does adjusting your cross % and side to side bite.

Maybe other people with the same kind of car and give you a ballpark of how your car is set up from the factory so at least you have an idea of what it'll take to get it right. Obviously there are factors such as driver weight and aftermarket modifications but at least you'll know have some sort of upfront knowledge of where you will need to start working. I don't know how much time your allowed at the garage and scale use for $80 but if you need you need to add/cut 80lbs from somewhere you better have a plan for that up front.

Wally (Welacey) isn't allowed to make the kind of changes to a CSP Miata it would take to get the car as you are describing. It's not even necessary to make the car turn properly. All he needs to do is set the ride height correct without over jacking any of the corners then get the cross weight to 50%. 20 minutes is all it should take once the ride height is set.

Oh well yeah if you aren't allowed to add/remove ballast in his class then it's easy once you set your ride height.
