  • Help Me Setting up for a T3 turbo

I am looking for info/help with getting a turbo installed and programed. I have a used T3 turbo and want to put in on my JDM H23A engine. My plan is to run around 5lbs of boost due to stock internals. I am looking at Hondata and megasquirt not sure which is better. Any info would be a great help.

I as well as many others on this board run megasquirt, and we all think it's the bees knees. I don't know anything about hondata though, so I can't speak on that.

Things you need to have in preparation for an MS build (assuming you're going to use MS to control spark timing and fuel):
    Bigger injectors
    Maybe a larger FPR
A coil, no distributers here! Ford EDIS, Coilpacks, etc. lots of options, read up.
Copper core spark plugs with a sufficiently small gap
A crank sensor or some sort, Hall effect or VR, along with a toothed crank gear
    Oil cooler
A way to route oil to and from the turbo into the pan/pickup.
And of course, MSnS, and a ton of time.

Not sure what all you would need for Hondata, but I'm assuming it would probably be an easier route since it's meant for hondas and the likes.

It all boils down to how comfortable you are with wiring, drilling, cutting, etc. And how much time you have. If the car is your daily driver, I wouldn't mess with it.

The good thing about Hondata is the Plug-and-Play functionality. Megasquirt will do no more than Hondata that I know of (in terms of using it on a Honda) but it will be cheaper and likely more hassle (sensor compatibility, etc). Either will work. It depends on your level of commitment and funds.

Cholewa covered most of the essentials. I will expand that a little ...

On the FPR, you specifically want a rising rate FPR. 1:1 or 2:1 will work. Most of these are made for a return style fuel system so check to make sure you have the right stuff.

Intercooler and piping. Oil cooler is optional, but never hurts. Will make things a bit better.

Upgraded MAP sensor (Hondata and MS should be able to run up to 5 bar).

Learn the limits of the setup. Do a lot of research and figure out the safe boost levels for that motor and tune for that.

Okay. Thanks for the help. This is my daily driver and my plans are to make it into the perfect mix street/autocross, but perhaps it is something I should wait and get into. I have the turbo and it isn't going anywhere. Any suggestions on tires? I'm thinking I may end up getting an additional set of wheels so I can get some aggressive gripped tires and not ride on them everyday.

        Again thanks for the help!

I would look at the Kumho Ecsta XS or the Hankook RS3. Both of these are very competitive tires, and are the cheaper of the "Street Tire" group. The Toyo and Bridgestone are going to be the high end of that group. But since you are just looking to participate locally and building up the car, that is my 2 cents.
