I guess the AWD is a novelty but the cars were truly unremarkable and the 2.0 DOHC engines were very proned to t-belt ,head gasket ,and valvetrain failures.

Yeah I spoke with the owner today. He states its leaking from the valve cover & camshaft seals. Also no signal from ignition to starter, its a hot wire job but it does have a title. It a very heavy car also....

IT's a 4G63 DSM, of course it's prone to all that. But, these cars can also make 900+ and run 9's on the stock transfer case ( a few times).
I think they made just enough to be homolagated (spelling?) into the WRC, if memory serves me correctly?
There was one at TGPR during The One Lap of America last year.
That homolagation model may have been the VR4, which also had the Eclipse turbo motor. The VR4 was a limited edition, something like 2000 copies a year, each numbered.
The VR4 was offered as a version of the Galant and the 3000GT (Stealth). The Galant offering was a 2.0l 4G63 that was as close as the US got to an Evolution until '03. The 3000GT VR4 was a turbo 6-cylinder and AWD.
The Eclipse GSX sold a lot of units here in the states ... not sure on an actual number though. There was no Eclipse VR4 that I know of, nor was the Eclipse ever a WRC car that I'm aware of, but I'm honestly not well versed in Eclipses.
The Starion was a rallied by Mitsu though and my be what you're thinking of.
The entire drivetrain in the GVR4 is not the same as the GSX. The GVR4 along with the 3kGTVR4 have 4 wheel stearing. The Galant also has a selectable transfer case. It was a very limited edition vehicle 1000 a year for 2 years.
The Galant GSX is a non turbo version and produces significantly less horsepower. Rare car. I wish this thing was still for sale. I might ditch the GST for it and get rallying this year.
1996 Eclipse GST - Fully Stock Future SCCA AutoX
1991 Talon TSi - AWD Needs Work Future SCCA RallyX
1996 Saturn SC1 - Super Slow Daily Driver
Was gonna pick this up but can't commit to a project right now.
Looks like a fun toy!
Just so yall know, I ended up buying that car, the only issue with it starting was the grommet on the clutch that engages the clutch pressure switch was missing. Put a nut n bolt in its place, the oil leak was due to the fact there was no valve cover gasket on it at all I drove the car for a year with no problems before I told it and quadrupled my money
