I got a high school buddy that has one his dad gave him, he no's nothing about them except he thinks he has to spend 400.00 for spark plug wires, the car is black interior black ,5 speed, and been in his garage for at least 10 years, no dents or dings not sure on miles ,what is a ball park price on this vehicle? I talked to him a few weeks ago about it and he's around 3000.00 for it. I am not much up on them my self but can do what it takes to get her running .Any comments on this year and type vehicle is much needed, thanks SAMMS dad

Great cars, but...
They can be pricey to maintain! And by pricey I mean, they can make owning a boat seem like a relatively inexpensive investment.
Without actually looking at the car it's virtually impossible to say what kind of deal that really is. It could be a great deal or a complete nightmare. I do know from personal experience the cooling system on 944's can be really tempermental and very costly. For example there is a little 4ish inch long coolent bypass hose about as big around as an index finger that went for about $130 back in the early 90's what that sells for today I can only imagine. If he's buying the spark plug wire ready to go on the car, that's about what they go for. Porsche's are amazing vehicles (except the 924's and 28's, nobody really knows what the engineers were thinking with those) but the price of being amazed can be a little overwhelming at times.
All that being said. If you are buying it for a project or to maybe come out and get involved with our Solo program or even Club Racing, it's a great car. But, do not buy it under any assumptions that it won't pull quite a bit of cash out of your pocket to get it ready to run.

There are 2 944's for sale in Huntsville. These may help you get a price idea for the 85 you're looking at:

I currently have a 1986 944 and this is the 3rd one I have had, it has been the best car I have ever owned. Cheapest car I have ever owned too because I work on it myself. Parts if you mailorder are no more than anyother normal car except for a few items. I had a 85 86 and a 87. The 85 was not so good but the others were great. They made a lot of upgrades in 86 but the earlier cars were still OK cars. My car has been great but I have had it for over 20 years. I am not sure how much one that is not running would be worth without looking at it. Yoder is correct, could be great of you may wish you had never saw it. They are great cars but in 25 years who knows how it has been treated.
Easiest car to drive quick there is. I remember one time with the Porsche club we had a DE at TGPR and one of the regular guys had a $1500 1983 944 and there was a guy that came out in an Esprit turbo Jim Clark edition. He got passed every time out by the guy in the old $1500 944 and finally was so pissed that he left early.
A Honda is transportation but a porsche is alive! Even a 924 and a 928.
I work for Honda but , I always have been and ALWAYS will be a Porsche guy.Paul Street
