  • flappy paddle Vettes?

I have been curious as to how well the flappy paddle automatics in the current Vettes work but have never seen a serious review of one. I assume they are nothing like the BMW SMG & Porsche PDK systems, but would they be suitable for a track event? Has anyone played with one?

When it comes down to it, so long as you can shift around when you want to, you're fine with an autotragic. The rabbit has its mistakes, but even in the auto, the transmission is never a real issue.

I have the notion (completely unfounded, of course) that an automatic 'vette could be a fun autocrosser but a disappointing track car. That's contingent on it not upshifting too soon, like my wife's Camaro does.

I just wonder how well the paddle shifting has been implemented. Where's Yoder on the subject...hasn't he driven everything at least once? And even if he hasn't I know he'll have an opinion

A friend of mine has a C6 with paddle shifters. As far as I can tell they work well but are kinda clunky to use ergonomically. He won't let me drive the car to see for myself. It'll hold a gear just fine but the trigger can be missed if you don't have your hand in that perfect spot.

          I'd still want a manual.

My only complaint with the rabbit on track was at tgpr, when I wanted to use the transmission to slow the car down entering a turn, it would not shift into lower gears until it was WELL under redline. Like, going from 4th to 3rd in turn one (the new turn 1) I had to get down to around 4krpms to get into 3rd, when redline is at 6300

Slowing the car down with the transmission is not a good thing thats why you rev match in a manual. Slowing the car down with the transmission will cause you a great deal of heart ache after a while and a rather deep hole in your wallet.

There is at least one guy around here (wherever "here" is) who regularly does track days with an automatic 'Vette. I had to put out a fire on that car, but it had something to do with the recent installation of an oil pressure or temperature gauge, not the tranny.

It's more of, braking and then down shifting so I can be in the proper gear to drive through the corner. But it wouldn't downshift until I was halfway through the corner.

I haven't driven a C6 yet. If there is anyone out there with one that will let me drive it, name the time and place and I'll be glad to beat the cr... err, I mean gingerly test it out.

I think one of the biggest questions to ask about the paddle shift is, WILL IT HOLD THE GEAR YOU TELL IT TO HOLD? If it will then it's not too terrible to live with. If you tap the little button on the left of the wheel and the car downshifts only to jump right back up, then it's fairly useless. That being said, I also feel that anything with paddle shift should have a dual clutch transmission in it and I don't think the Vette does. Without the Dual Clutch it's just a tarted up Turbo400 with a bunch of software that may or may not really work.

You're right, I do have an opinion .

Vortex has some alright deals on rabbits, but you could probably find an 07 somewhere at a dealership and get it for ridiculously cheap.

As for the auto's holding gear, at least with the rabbit, it will automatically shift up once it reaches redline. So there's pretty much no limiter, because the car autoshifts for you. BUT, if i'm driving around and pop it into manual and drop it into 2nd, it will stay in second until I either: shift out of second, or reach redline in 2nd. Which has its consequences when I forget that i'm in manual, I'll get to a stop light/sign, and the car goes into first, and I can't hear the engine/exhaust until i'm halfway through 2nd wondering why the car is so jerky.

The whole reaching redline and shifting for you thing is exactly why manumatics STINK. Bang the limiter all you want, but having a transmission shifting up and then hunting around for the lower gear again a split second later is a HUGE problem.

If it stays in the gear you tell it to stay in, cool. If not, it's just not worth it.
