I'm sure everyone has seen the footage of Felipe Massa taking a hit from a spring in the head that fell off of Ruben Barrichelos car at 175mph then careening into the tire barrier at 125mph. Now F1 is talking about making changes to the cars in the name of safety. What about bubble top canopies on the cars? Make them look more like a jet fighter than the already appear. Latest word is Massa is awake and responding well but has damaged his
left eye.

Yes, it was a bad accident. It's something that should be considered by anyone running an open car. Just another inch and it would have been very different.

I really had a bad feeling about the injury/situation, but he seems to be coming out of it well.

The safety crew took forever to get to him following the impact with the tire barrier.

In American racing series, the emergency vehicles seem to be on the move before the car has fully come to rest. I remember Ralf Schumacher coming to grief at Indianapolis and I believe it was a full minute before EV's were anywhere near the scene.

Considering that you have to communicate the problem to the tower, the steward has to order EV to go, and they have to wait for at least a break in traffic, a minute's pretty darned fast on anything more complex than an oval track.

This year's F1 season has been a lot of fun so far, what with the fall of the mighty (McLaren/Ferrari/BMW) and the rise of the backmarkers. I think it will be quite amusing if Schumacher returns with no testing time and is competitive, especially relative to Kimi.

I read on Massa's website that he is out of intensive care, off the respirator, opening his left eye and able to see, OK on motor skills, and took his first steps today. It was a horrible injury - but also could have been so much worse. I wish him all the best - and his wife, too - she's pregnant with their first baby, due in November.

I pulled for Schumacher until he began winning absolutely every weekend. I can't wait to see, however, how he does after not being in the car on a week-to-week basis. He is absolutely incredible both on the raw speed and his part of the strategy. I can't wait to see it.

I'm the same way...loved him at Jordan, Benetton, and when he brought Ferrari out of their wasteland. But the same guy winning every weekend is very boring. I got to where I was pulling for ABS...anybody but schumacher. However, this will be different and I can't wait to see it.

btw, did y'all see where he is getting around the testing ban by driving 2007 vintage cars in the program Ferrari has for owners of their old F1 equipment. how would you like to be the guy who gets the call from Maranello.."pardon me sir, would you mind if a certain Mr Schumacher borrows your car for a couple of weeks?"

I think that Eddie Jordan sits around his house and Ireland and dreams of what might have been had Schumacher driven more than 1 mile of racing in his car... I remeber that Belgian GP well - Schumacher's clutch goes exiting the hairpin and de Cesaris gets within a few laps of a podium or possible win before the lump overheats...
