People do this a lot, but it is a real PITA and there's a good chance of damaging the cylinder with the channel locks. Some people also use a pair of needle nose pliers to press on the dimples while turning. In the end, the right tool makes rear brake pad changing a 15-30 minute job with very little effort.

I replaced a rear caliper on the teg for this reason Now I have the ($2) tool.
