  • Brakes for the Cobalt...

    Well I was wondering what everyone's opinion was on brake options for my Cobalt. I will be needing some very soon. The engineers at Chevy did a nice job designing rotors that are non serviceable(i.e. you can't turn them) So I will need some new ones. I was thinking about some type of slotted rotors and some lightly upgraded pads.

    I found a kit on eBay, but I don't know anything about the pads that come with the kit.



    I've looked around and haven't really found anything interesting. It's been a while since I've bought brakes for a newer car, and I definitely don't want to go overboard.

    Brembo solid rotors and carbotech ads. Slotted rotors (other that OE] are for the short bus kids that want to look cool.

    On the civic I use the cheapest rotor I can find with a warranty. They last about two weeks and I warranty them.

    Everything else gets brembro's

      Can't find Brembo rotors for my car...and aren't carbotech brakes a little extreme for the street?

              Well that should tell you that I value most people's opinion on this site...lol.

              I think the kit on ebay will be pretty cheap. I need to check the rear brakes to see if I even need them.

                iunno about cobalt's and I can't check ebay at work, but, STi's have a StopTech package for around 600$ that includes rotors and (decent) pads

                  The FD gets the cheapest rotors I could fine, and that was at NAPA. The only performance difference I've seen in rotors on my car is that the cheapest seem to last the longest, and they cost less.

                    Do not get cross drilled rotors if you plan to do any spirited driving in the car. They are street only unless you get the really high dollar multi-piece ones that are made to take abuse. Basically, they crack when heated and stressed.

                    I've used ATE rotors in the past and they worked well. They were slotted in an unusual way. they did seem to help with brake fade in the mountains on my stock pads and fluid, so I say the did work for something.

                      carbotech's SUCK on the street --- don't do it. Stoptech is supposed to be good.

                        Well, I honestly don't know if carbotech evan makes a street ad. Guess I should check into that before I recommend them eh. My dad has the ATE's on the mini. I was trying to remember the name of them.

                        The rest of us quit listening to Ervin months ago.

                          call me crazy but I am curious what you plan to do with the car.If you are doing autox and DD then any brake pad will be just fine and any rotor will be just fine .IF you are going to do any track stuff....do the above and buy a spare set of cheap rotors and Hawk HP+ pads ,and change the rotors and pads when you have a track day coming up .I havent used slotted rotors but I havent needed to.

                            I was happy with the Hawk HP+ pads and stock rotors when I was daily-driving the Escort. You need to be ready for the noise - they squeal a lot, and people will say "you need to get those brakes fixed."

                            I liked 'em enough that I have another set ready to put on Sue's Camaro, soon, in case I "need" to put it on track, again.
