I spent the weekend standing in station 6 at Barber, and got to watch a well-recognized SEDiv driver (with multiple track records, including at BMP) with a blue and orange Miata pound on the curbing as he showed some drivers with theoretically much faster machinery that the driver is a factor, too. I don't think there were more than one or two laps when he wasn't absolutely on it!
Unfortunately, he also did multiple spins and offs, and apparently broke (lost!) either a wheel or a wheel bearing on Saturday afternoon (see "pound on the curbing," above.)
He was back out on Sunday, and fairly quickly managed to go far enough off around 2, 3, or 4 that he scooped up enough dirt with the splitter that the radiator was essentially plugged with mud. That's when he decided to pack it in for the weekend.
My guess is that he (along with a truckload of OPM Miatas) was doing some last-minute tuning before the NASA Nationals, later this week and weekend, at COTA. Anyway, I'll bet he's hoping that he got it all out of his system already.
. . . and Ricky and Joe were out there, too.
I love this stuff!
