  • Subaru Legacy GT question.

Long story short the teenage daughter wrecked POS number one, she is getting a pass on it first car due to extenuating circumstances so we need POS number two.

Neighbor has 2000 Legacy GT with 200k for $2,000. I'm going to look at it tonight and would like to know what would be a deal breaker on a Subaru. He said valve covers leak, a quick search on the net shows that to be pretty simple. I realize it's high miles and cheap, if it was a Honda or Toyota I would be all over it but I know nothing of Subarus.

Value cover gasket leak plaque all Subaru's, but parts are relatively cheap, its pain to get to and fix but with your skills I believe you should have no problems.
    things to check for.
leaking front seal, valve covers (2) the one on the passenger side drip directly on to the ex-manifold, front drive axles, wobbly shifter, and if you have the tool for it. compression test. C

2.5 or 2.2? 2.5 are known to have head gasket issues.

They did a revision on the head gasket in like, 05 or 06 I think, but that's always the one thing you gotta look out for on the subies.

Other than that, they are effectively the "new old volvos", they'll run and run and run and run, and there's plenty of dirt cheap parts in the junk yards now too.

Because they heard I liked my name, so they put my name as my name so I could have my name in my name... all the time.

Looks like we have a Subaru now. Ended up paying $1,800. It will need tires, valve cover gaskets and maybe an axle. It looks pretty good, I was surprised by the interior, a little cleanup and it will look pretty good.

First off, a hello to everyone! I just joined this forum as of today.

Just wanted to let engled know that there is a 1998 Legacy sitting at Pull-A-Part right now that should have some matching or interchangeable parts for the 2000 model you bought. I haven't been down there to look at it but have seen it listed online.

On another note, I'm a novice DIY car repair guy and I feel like Subarus are easier to work on, in most cases, than some other cars. I drive and a 2006 Legacy N/A and really enjoy it.
