  • Help wanted: Birmingham, AL "race" team

    Guys and Gals,

I'm looking for some help. The paid in beer and good times kind of help.

I'm working on a build for the the "$2012 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge". For those of you who may have not heard of it, it is an event where participants are tasked with buying/building a car for no more than $2012. This car will then compete in 3 competitions: autocross, drag race, and concours. Highest combined score wins, with many other prizes along the way. You can read about it here:

Welcome to the home of Grassroots Motorsports, the hardcore sports car magazine—and your home for car reviews, tips, and road racing news.

The event is coming up in 5-ish months, and my team has actually got a bit smaller... my dad is attempting to relocated from California, but it is taking longer than expected. Another member took a new job and moved several hours away. So right now it is just me and 1 other guy working on it. The other guy is building the engine, but that is basically the limit of what he is going to do... the rest is on me, and I'm not making enough progress on my own.

This is a really cool project car, and when finished you'll see it a lot at the local events. You can read about it here:

If you are highly skilled, I could use your help. If you know nothing, but want to get your hands dirty and learn, I could use your help. Basically, I'm not picky, just looking for people that love cars and want to help us succeed.

Did I mention it is a Lotus?

All of my contact info is on the website, or you can PM me here.

    Thanks,
    Brad

If I didn't live four hours away I'd be all over it.

Seems to be a common problem for my build. Also, anyone who significantly contributes to the build will be able to drive it too.

If we could make it like one weekend a month or something like that then I could. I have three day weekends too

If I weren't building my own car I'd be all over it as well. Just so short on time ...

I don't have many skills outside of bladesmithing and quality control but I'd be willing to come up from Prattville for a weekend or two or anytime during the week since I'm no longer working.....

Right now, I don't know that I have a weekend's worth of work to do... I mean there is plenty to do, but there is a lot of one-off things that have to be done to get to the point where a thrashing weekend would work.

My next big task is mocking up the rear-end, transmission and engine so that I can fabricate mounts and do whatever else is required to make the pieces fit.

                    Any metal workers out there?

I make knives so I'm not bad at cutting, shaping and polishing but my welding is horrible....

I used to be decent at MIG. Haven't done any in a few years. If you got some scrap I might be able to get it acceptable
