A couple friends of mine run or have run the RX-8 for autox and while they're great cars, just don't hit any cones. The plastic pieces which make up the front of the car falls off/breaks/comes undone after cone contact. The plastic push rivets just simply don't hold up to impact.

I don't know the year but Dennis Sparks and Paul Ballance from TVR are who I'm talking about. Dennis loses parts and pieces whenever the rare occurrence of hitting a cone happens. Paul gave up using the RX8 for autocross because he was tired of replacing or fixing panels that broke or fell out.

I drove one the other day and it's a really nice car although I found it hard to see out of clearly and cars with sunroofs leave you no headroom,.. and I'm short!

the more i think about it the more i like the 2.5 rs. it's a good reliable car, decent size, good mpg, good auto-x, & completely unlimited upgrades. i would think it would make an incredible sm car by upgrading it to sti standards, then modifing it from there. i believe all the engine & suspension goodies from an sti will bolt on, just slightly different frame & driveshaft (wheel base differences). i'm sure someone will let me know if i am wrong.

I haven't driven it hard, but if the mini is too small for you, consider the mini clubman. The four door version is significantly longer. While I haven't driven the clubman to comment on mpg or performance, in my cooper S I can get well over 30mpg almost 40mpg if I draft behind semitrucks.

Also, I have proven that parts don't fall off a mini with high-speed, serious cone collisions.

STi is back in the mix after a test drive today. Unfortunately wasn't able to get up to decatur for the CTS-V yet. hopefully tomorrow or thurs.

the problem isn't me fitting in the mini its the rear seats, they need to be accessible and usable for adult passengers which makes it a no go.

Here's another radical idea to throw into the mix - two cars! Then the universal answer applies (Miata) plus something nice for you and the 'rents to travel in.

The new cts-v is sechs... but I don't want 60k of debt, even for a car as hot as that one.

I believe it would be ASP with the Z06 although the ZR1 will prolly not be legal for stock class

A CTS-V is going to be a gas guzzler and a tire burner. That's a heck of a range though, Cobalt to CTS-V

I like the two car idea as well. A miata and a four door civic.

I like the two car idea also, when one breaks you still have another to drive. And if you are going to be driving one hard it's going to break sooner or later.
