vinyl siding

heres the deal. I have to do some repairs to my 40 year old house . I have masonite siding that is long in the tooth and some of it will need replaced due to warping and rotting. I am looking at options with vinyl siding being at the top of the list of options . From what I read...the underlayment and prep /waterproofing is way more crucial than the application of the actual vinyl siding.

I have to replace aproximately 12 sheets of 4x8 wood due to rot. Obviously I dont want to underdo it . Is OSB good enough or do I need to do better than that?

Right or wrong I built my detached garage with OSB and nailed the vinyl siding on top of that. I think these days they put a wrap on it before putting the siding on.

On my house I had to replace the masonite on the gables. I used cement board for that. Use a circular saw to cut it but it seem like you're cutting concrete. I don't expect it to rot - ever.

I was planning to either felt over the OSB or use the tyvek covering/wrap on it . I have read alot of mixed opinions and most people comment that OSB expands alot if it gets wet but I figure if it were felted and then had vinyl on it it should be fine . I dont know .

OSB definitely expands if it gets wet. The only reason it would get wet though is if you and your son are playing catch and one of you misses the ball and it hits the vinyl siding. If the temperature is cold you'll create a crack. You can create a hole if the temperature is colder than it was the 1st time the ball hit it.
