  • Where to shop helmets locally?

    Good morning folks.

A coworker will be joining us at the autocrosses soon and is looking for helmets. He wants to try some on before buying. Where can he shop them in the Birmingham/Anniston areas (he lives in Pell City)?

    Thanks!

I don't know of a place locally, but as some input, I purchased my Pyrotect helmet online using their sizing chart and it fits great. I can't speak for other brands though.

Any motorcycle store will have helmets and a catalog that he can order from. I went to a dirt bike store in pelham and ordered out of their catalog since they only had dirtbike helmets in store.

Joe used the sizing info online and doesn't like the way his fits. Maybe he'll chime in. I would agree with trying on a few before buying. Heck, just wait until the next autocross and ask a few people.

Yeah, I bought mine last year from Discovery Parts near Atlanta and learned the hard way that the sizing charts do not always work. Thankfully Ron was bringing the Discovery Parts trailer to the NASA event @ Barbers so I was able to exchange it in person.

Ordered a Large Bell Sport (their "economy" line) that was very uncomfortable, but the same size Bell M4 fits great.

SECO is only a few blocks from work, so I'll send him there first.

While you're in the market you should look at getting Zack a helmet that fits, as his is far to small.

                I think it's the hair

When bought last year it was actually loose, but it has always fit a little funny. We do need to look at it again. I wasn't in the market but may need to be.

I used the Pyrotect chart, too, and bought a large as I landed near the top of the L range. I would have been better off with an XL as the large doesn't exactly have 6-runs-in-a row wearability for me. Not a lot of stretch there, so it's better to be a little loose than too tight.

                    Helmets

If you can't find anything locally, go to SAFERACER.com. They have a return policy that allows you to order and if it doesn't fit, return it for a better fit. At least they use to.

Discovery Parts has a similar return policy.

Won't a Snell-Rated Motorcycle helmet work for AX?

It is hard to mail order a helmet without a return policy.
The size charts can be all over the place.
Different shapes... If you read other forums, people refer to Bell-Shaped Heads
                            and Simpson- Shaped Heads.

                            EX:
Bell Large 7-1/2 - Fits me well
Simpson 7-5/8 - Painfully tight on me
HJC XXL 7-7/8 - Is my helmet. Very Comfortable.

Good thing I have an enclosed car.
My head would create a ton of drag !!!

BTW, took a look at Zac's helmet last night and the size looks good. I've got some pics from his first few events where he was wearing it rotated too far back on his head, which made it look comically small. He's wearing it more correctly these days.

One issue he has is, for him, the strap anchor points sit too far back and the strap wears into his throat if he tightens it. Not sure what to do about this, as I think he would have that issue with most helmets.
