UPDATE REGARDING TGPR Time Trial

Due to the fact that my Aunt lost her long hard-fought battle with cancer late last night, I will not be attending the 2009 Time Trail Event at TGPR this weekend. I will be in Illinois with my family during this time. In my absence, Steve Patterson has agreed to take over as event chair. I want to thank Steve, Ricky Ragan and Chuck Schultz for all the support they have offered for me as well as the Time Trial Event itself. I've said it before, this club is just like family and I appreciate everyone of you.

We're going to be short handed on Friday evening, so if you can help please do. We need someone to work the waiver stand at the front gate as people arrive. Contact Ricky Ragan or Chuck Schultz if you can offer your time for a while on Friday evening.

Thanks Kathy for the kind words and for the offer of working waivers but the track now has a professional gate keeper. For future events the cost for entry to the track will be $5 per person per day.

I should chime in here to clarify the _new _TGPR policy.Workers and event officials are excluded from this $5 charge provided they are on the worker list at the gate .I had an opportunity to speak with Mrs. Upchurch today and the gist of it is that the track hired permanent gate personnel due to some mishaps with the gate (it was let down on a car or two )and as a way of offsetting the business expense of paying that personel,they decided that this was a way to do that rather than increase their track rental to the club/organizer.They have also had more paddock power boxes installed for which they have to pay for monthly whether used or not .

I am not loving that they sprung this on us at this late date but I can understand that their expenses have to be passed along to the consumers somehow .This was how they chose to do it .Im sure they will learn along the way to tweak it so that its going to be fair for everyone (I hope).This $5 fee is NOT being used for this event but will be imposed by the track in future events.

I don't have individual email addresses for everybody who's
volunteered to help us with our Track Trials and School at Talladega
Gran Prix Raceway, so I'll blast the announce list and forums to make
sure everybody has an opportunity to see this. Also, we can always use more help, so feel free to join in.

Please arrive at the track on Saturday and Sunday at 7 A.M., so that
you will have plenty of time to register, check in with me or Ricky,
and attend a short meeting/training/refresher session at 7:30. We plan
to have cars on course at 8.

If you're working outside (most specialties,) be sure to wear
comfortable, sturdy shoes and have clothing appropriate for springtime
in Alabama - just about any weather. Corner workers are urged to wear
white shirts, if possible. If you don't have white, do not wear red
or yellow, because they can distract the drivers who are looking for
those colors of flags in case of an emergency. Bring any snacks you
might want, along with a couple drinks of water and some sun block.
Leather palmed gloves are a good idea, in case you need to pick up any
hot or sharp parts on the track. (All parts that fall off of a race
car are hot, sharp, or both.)

Lunches will be provided each day, and everyone is invited to a
cookout on Saturday evening after the track goes cold, about 5 P.M.

If you are camping, you should arrive before 10 P.M. Friday, or you
may not be allowed to enter the property until morning. The gates
will be locked from 10 P.M. until 7 A.M. each day.

The most important thing to do is to plan to have fun. This should be
a nice, easy, laid-back weekend, with a nice variety of cars. It will
be a chance to tune up your flagging and communicating skills, or
other race specialty, without a lot of pressure. I'm really looking
forward to it. Feel free to call or email with any questions (before

They will be posted on Mylaps as soon as we can. The weekend was GREAT!!! The event went off without a hitch. Thanks to all the workers that helped this weekend. We had enough there to make everything go smooth. The event was done in a different format than any previous years and set a new record for timed runs. Wally Lacey ran the most runs with over 84 TIMED runs. That doesn't include 2 15 minute practice sessions. All the participants had a great time and we will be looking into a second event later this year.

This was the smoothest running Time Trials/Solo 1 that I have seen in the last 20 years. The most incredible thing to me was the almost total absense of "offs" that would have delayed the event.

Every competitor I sopke with was VERY HAPPY! And to put in perspective what Steve said about the number of laps, the previous record was 27. That's an improvement in excess of 300%!

BTW, during the worker runs at the end of the day, Michael Cholwea was cooking the track! And doing it in a totally stock, street tired, automatic VW!!!

One thing - I never could figure out why folks who rode out in the van decided later to go by foot to and from their corner stations.
