Most tracks are easy to drive at 8/10ths. At 8/10ths, you do not even have to drive the correct line. Ratchet that up to 10/10ths or 12/10ths and the game changes completely. Dropping your track times by 2-5 seconds a lap can be easy. Searching for that last few tenths on a lap is another experience entirely. A lot of people cannot handle a sweeping turn at 120 mph and get the car on the limit all the way thru it.
Driving in an autoX and on track are two entirely different styles. Track is a lot smoother. The turns are not as abrupt and braking is smoother. Every time I did a TT and then came back to do an AutoX the next weekend, it took me a few runs to get back in autoX mode. When I took the TAC Driving School, Steve Hoelscher immediately said "Oh, you are a road racer huh?"
All that being said, both are fun to do.

Damn well you shouldDon't go dissing someone until you know them.
I started with Solo, went to Solo II, hill climbs, then to driver's school and road racing. All are intense in their own right, but RR sure last a lot longer.

All this started because of you Darryl.... LOL
I have done worker laps and went about 8/10 on TGPR. I see both as having pros and cons. A track is a little more "boring" to me... I said it! lol Straights are no fun..zero and yes my car accelerates at an OK pace. There is just so much less driver involvement on a track IMHO. An autox only lasts 45 seconds sure but for that 45 seconds you and your car are doing all that is physically/mentally possible. It's a bigger adrenaline rush for me vs my 20 or so worker laps at 70-80%. Again you work less at a track..or do you? More car prep/?recovery? is required, brake bleeding after sessions/days each time, I would change oil more frequently, tire changes, etc. So really you can't argue you work less at a track event either. I do like the higher speeds at a track though. That is probably the only reason I want to do track events.. plus C is going to start...and that STi is stupid fast... Competition and bragging rights.. that's what it comes down to lol.
Even though I plan to do both, I still believe autox requires more driver ability. I've seen and experienced both. Reaction time and car control are greater in an autox driver. Darryl got it dead on about autocrossers make good road racers, but not so much the other way around.
That being said I do plan to do some PDX/TT stuff in the future and experience it all lol!
EDIT: And what John just said. You only have a handful of runs to get it right at an autox, you can lap that track for hours.Last edited by HPEVOX; 09-13-2013, 02:17 PM.

Anybody can drive a car fast, and easily beat others with more skill, with an overdog car. Try bringing your car to a hillclimb and see how your balls do.

I would say they are both the equally fun, but to be good or one of the best, autocross takes more skill. One of the best attributes to each is all the great friendships you make and the oppurtunity to hang out with all of the SCCA guys and gals. Whether it is a couple of hours or a couple of minutes, i love them both. And i will be glad to shag cones even if one day it has to be in a wheelchair.

AutoX runs may be only 30-40 seconds but it's an intense 30-40 seconds when done correctly. After 10 minutes on track boredom sets in and you start looking for a checkered flag.
You can't win a PDX but I've met a few PDX National Champions.

Aurocross courses are much shorter, sure, but you get to experience around 30 features on each run. Assuming you get 6 runs, let's math ...
25*7=175 corners
6*30=180 features
It's basically a wash when viewed from this perspective.
Sure, when you look at 5 sessions over a day you get see more corners than an autocross. But, some would argue that the varied features of an autocross balance out the benefit. Especially seeing as each autocross is different and each track day at a give course is essentially the same.
Both are great ways to spend a Saturday ... both build driver skill ... just in different ways. It's not a competition.
