  • Mark Kilgore, Alabama's Rain Racer?

3rd place overall, in the rain?? Congrats to Mark on his class win and 3rd place overall finish on a very wet Sunday Time Trials at AMP.

The course is very technical and has a lot of elevation change but flows well. The facilities are still under construction but this will be a neat little place when completed. The 98db sound limit (track requirement, specific events may be lower) may be an issue for some but don't pass up a chance to run this course.

All in all it was a great weekend! The course is A LOT of fun and the videos just don't do the elevation changes justice. The track had lots of grip, the rumble strips were definitely in play and easy on the suspension, and the elevation made it difficult to learn the speeds in braking zones and through corners. The facility itself though....well really there are no facilities. The track itself is complete, but that's it. There is one set of garages that are done. But the parking lot and paddock area are still gravel. The roads getting around in the facility are still dirt (sat)/mud (sun). The place has potential for sure, but I was a little disappointed in the state of the facility, but I am nick picking really.

The TT event was split up into two points events. Saturday we ran a short course using a cut through, and then Sunday we used the entire course. Saturday, the ATL Region also ran a Solo event on the section we weren't running, and funny enough a mustang spun out and hit the armco over there, but we were incident free

I was running in Street Unlimited, and was competing against Leon (TVR) and Mike Massell (sp? from ATL). Leon drives a Really Big Turbo with a car and motor attached, and Mike was in a '95 BMW M3. Leon ended up with a 1:12.2 in first place, I was second with a 1:14.6, and Mike was third with a 1:16.4. All in all it was a good day.

Sunday, the rain came early in the morning before we were up and many people were talking about not running. Understandably, many didn't have rain tires. I had been running all weekend on my fairly new Hankook RS3's so I thought I would give it a shot and run. Leon was "running", and by that I mean he did two laps on his slicks to get championship points. Mike was also running so that pretty much meant I had to run as this would be a good chance for me to get some points back from Leon for the championship. We were running the full course, and surprisingly, the Hankooks had TONS of grip in the wet. During my second session, I was driving about 90% of what I had done Saturday in the dry. The loss of time was really in the braking zone and a couple corners were you had to back off just a smidge. But it was a ton of fun and the full course was really cool. I ended up first with a 1:46.6, Mike ran a 1:56 and Leon did something in the 2:30's.

I'll post up my video's in a bit once I get them edited a little.

Here's my fastest lap from Saturday.

Its a pretty eye-level view of what you're looking at and the number of blind corners. The uphill turn going on to the straight was especially fun!!! I hope someone got some pictures of the cars in that turn!

And here's my fastest lap from Sunday. Its in the rain, but my Hankooks still provided a lot of grip and I was quite surprised and really impressed. I also won the award for biggest rooster tail thanks to john's wing haha!

I was doing about 100mph down the front straight and the car felt stable and confident. It was a lot of fun and I would love to give it another go in the dry!

Video of the rooster tail is needed. I wish I could have gotten video from outside, but really all you would have seen is a huge wall of water over the fence level on the straights. It was pretty awesome.

The rooster tail was a sight.

No rain tires or bowling balls here. A vid from Saturday:
