  • Road Atlanta TT/SARRC/Pro-IT/PDX May19-20

I'm starting to look into going to this event and it got me looking at the economics of racing. I know, there isn't anything economical about racing, but I just started to total up the tracktime compared to the entry fee. I found some things I shouldn't have gone looking for.

For the upcoming Road Atlanta Time Trial the entry fee is $150. For that fee you get three 15 minute sessions on Saturday for a cost per minute of $3.33

For the upcoming Road Atlanta SARRC Race the entry fee is $325. For that fee you get one 20 minute qualifying session on Saturday, one 10 minute warmup session on Sunday and an 18 lap/30minute race on Sunday for a total tracktime of approx 60 minutes at cost per minute of $5.41

For the past weekend autocross at Oak Mountain Amphitheater the entry fee is $30. for SCCA members. For that fee you got six runs around 36 seconds on Saturday for a cost per minute of $8.33!!!

I suggest to everyone who autocrosses, either get involved in road racing or time trials as it is cheaper, or drive slowly around the course to get the most amount of track time for the money. I especially recommend this plan to Lyle Cain. He really needs to slow down and enjoy the drive and save money too!!

If seat time is all that count's in the equation my commute to Bessemer daily has time trial beat badly.

I have also done this math before. Hurt my feelings pretty bad for the autox time vs pay as well as you have to work when you're not driving....

The point is in the last paragraph. I guess. Just thinking about money too much.

If you show up and help set up, it's only 15 bucks, which is 4 something an hour. If you work a TT, well damn it's free.

So, let see here. If you set up, and drive a slow car, very well of course, your cost is like $3.12 per minute for a 45 sec run. So if John can get Lyle to do set up and do 1 minute runs Lyle would have a $2.50/minute cost. CSP may want to come up with a magnet, perhaps a dollar sign, for the lowest cost per run champ?

John, once the car is reliable, the costs are much easier to stomach. Going to the track and doing nothing but changing tires is certainly the way to enjoy the weekend. Chuck

This useless brain work was just figuring the entry fees. I decided a long time ago I didn't ever want to know what the total cost per minute or lap would be. Adding in the cost of fuel, food, hotels, bodywork, tires and brakes, engine rebuilds, engine overhauls and engine re-rebuilds would just make me want to stop and take up golf...no wait, that's just as bad.

Chuck, I'm starting to learn the truth in that statement.

I was gonna say the additional costs of hotel tires etc add up. If you really need a good cry figure out a national tour cost per run
