Current standings before drops begin

Exciting season in SM. the last 2 events WILL decide the points championship.

Sara needs just one more class win to take the championship. If I win both of the tow final events, I will take the championship. Pretty exciting!

Some scenarios ...

I win both of the final events and Sara takes second - 71 to 68 to me
Sara wins one and I win the other, and we each place second to one another - 71 to 68 to Sara
Sara wins one and I win the other, with Sara taking 3rd - 69 to 68 to Sara

So, the championship is mine to lose ... that's a lot of pressure! I have to win both events!

There wasn't a discussion this year that I recall, but it is in the season supps.

Looking over the 2011 docs. Going by the "SCCA Style" of reading rules, it doesn't say that there will be any points drops, so I guess there are none. We've run points drops since I started in '07 and I don't remember that changing, That's the only reason I'm confused. I liked the drops system because it allows people to miss a couple of events without penalty. But, if it's gone it's gone. I will update the timing files.

I still think it should be best 8 of 10. Miss an event or drive a different car (in XP that's not really an issue since you can run anything) and you've basically forfeited the championship.

I wasn't really competing for points this year, since I was driving a new car that's way more fun to drive poorly than not, but still, while it awards attendance, not everyone can make every single event.

As I understand it, the drops went away last year, and stayed away this year, to help "encourage" folks to participate in more events. The 2011 supps are just a lightly edited version of the 2010 set.

I just chatted with John about it and there will be no points drops. Personally, I like them for the same reason Cholewa said, but it's the Kilgore's call on this, and they'd already made it ... I just wasn't aware.

Seems like we had also this conversation on the board late last year when folks realized there were no drops to be had. I don't particularly care how we do it as long as we stick to the published rules.

Yeah, you can't please everyone. I'm with you Rod. Sometimes us old timers miss these changes because we just assume things.

I would just suggest this one change ... update the Supps document to explicitly state that there will be no points drops, rather than allowing the chance of improper assumption like I had. Just like one line ... "Results from all 10 events will count toward the season points championship. There will be no 'drops.'" This will clear it up for old timers.

And, talking to John, this also had a little to do with the year end points back in '09 when a lot of changes were proposed but not completely thought through. It caused some issues for the championship points, which probably had a little to do with the removal of drops in 2010.
