  • Call for 2019 Site Suggestions

I'm already thinking about 2019 sites for Autocross. It's been great to be at the Met, but if I can get us a larger space, I'd love to. I'd like to use y'all's hive-mind to come up with some fresh ideas. Our space at the Hoover Met is about 3 Acres of usable space. Milton Frank in Huntsville is about 10 usable acres. Here is a handy tool to check space via maps: http://www.mapdevelopers.com/area_finder.php

Preferred format for your response would be:

    Site Name
    Site Address
Do you know a contact there?
    Any restrictions you know of?

I'll update this first post with ideas as they flow in.

    WORKING ON THESE SITES:

    1. Oak Mountain Amphitheater - tried this last year, they weren't very interested. Estimated 6.5 Acres.
    2. Dog Track - worried about surface condition, but potential spaces could range from 3.5 Acres to 12 Acres.
    3. Shelton State CC - Estimated 7.8 Acres
    2001 Green Miata
    2007 Black Miata
    29 XSB

    Shelton State?

Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa has several large parking lots. I have no idea as to if they would be suitable for autocross or the logistics of any of that, tho.

We ran there twice 2 years ago. The lot is reasonably good although not that big. Regardless the administration at Shelton didn't want to run the risk of tearing up their lot. Might be worth a revisit.

Before this becomes a repeat of past threads it might be helpful to post a list with all sites that we have already ruled out and the reason.

Example: Shelton had a third party come in and sour the administration against car events. However, even if it was a viable site the events we ran there were enough to show that the distance was deemed too far by our members from the northeastern part of the state and that there was little interest at that time in the Tuscaloosa area itself. Maybe the last part has changed enough to warrant trying again.

I know a lot of cops who used to work off duty at Shelton State and could get me a meeting with the administrators, if that’s something y’all wanted to pursue.

            Cameron,
Have we ever considered using Craig Field in Selma as an autocross sight. It is 78 miles from the Oak Mt Amphitheater and sort of halfway between Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.
I could call and see if they have space available. The AL State Trooper Academy was there for many years and used a closed runway and taxiways for driver training.
            Thanks,

Jim, I contacted Craig Field a couple years ago and they were about to announce some sort of economic development for the airfield and were not interested in renting. Not sure where that stands now. Please feel free to contact them and see if anything has changed.

It's bit far but it's a concrete ex-airbase similar to Moultrie, Grenada, and perhaps even Lincoln. Concrete sites are always a draw if the surface is in good shape and we can get on there.

              Thanks!

It looks like they have new executive director. A press release from December also hints at he is looking for businesses to use the plane parking area (the area we care about) which to me means there isn't much there right now. Might be worth a call.

Is there a schedule of events yet for 2019? Or are we waiting to post until we have confirmed locations?

We'll be running all the events at the Met. We are working out a schedule with them now, and will post it when complete.
