Forum will no longer be utilized!

After facing many challenges with utilization of this forum for many years, the board voted on the evening of 1/12/2026 to stop use of the forum in favor of the modern, more effective means.

Most of our general club organization will now be coordinated via Discord and results from our events along with schedules and announcements will be hosted on our main alscca.net webpage.

What does this mean for the old forum? Well, in short we are going to stop using it. This has been reviewed several times in the past few years, and there has been a desire for some of more tenured members of the club to have the historic content preserved. In an effort to preserve this content, it was discovered that we could not simply export the content to be placed in a modern website. This forum will now become an archive only forum and will not be monitored. If you wish to preserve any of the content, this is your time to search the pages to find it. There is no promise that this content will remain available forever with the fragile nature of this forum.

  • Supps for Barber Events (@ Proving Grounds)

    Hi all,

I wanted to start out by saying that having an autocross event at the Barber Proving Grounds will be around 7 times as expensive as having an event at Oak Mountain or the Hoover Met (before the exotics). Because of that financial risk to the club and our ability to hold future Solo events if we choose to continue to run at Barber, we'll need to do a few things we don't normally do to manage that risk.

With that in mind and in order to not charge entry fees 7x what they were, we will need to set some conservative policies in order to mitigate these risks. I'll attempt to explain them and their reasoning here, followed by a post of general park rules requested by Zoom. (which will also be posted at the trailer on the day of the event)

    1) Entry fee will be higher, similar to our last Solo event at TGPR. It will be the same $60 for everyone for just the autocross. No discounts for this first event. We'll revisit early setup and specialty discounts at a later time if this event is a success. We'll need to bring in over 100 entrants (3 run groups) and everyone already not an SCCA member will absolutely need to sign the (no obligation) Weekend Membership which is a small bit of paperwork but will bring our Insurance cost down.

    2) The Barber Skidpad is included in the rental. (package deal) This will be a worker position and jackassery will be policed. Unlimited 5 lap runs will be a flat $20, or if you'd like to make it rain, $1 per 5 lap run. Given 3 run groups, there will be a heat where your run group is 'off' and you'll have an hour or so free to run there, get food, etc. The skidpad, we are told, will be wet. There is a particular low-friction coating to the asphalt that makes it slippery when wet. You are warned.

    3) Early setup will be Friday evening. First car off at 9am Saturday. We were given the opportunity to setup the evening before our event and I can't find a compelling reason to not take advantage of it and get a bit of an earlier start to the race day.

    4) Everyone who wants to run will have to be registered on Motorsportreg.com Go ahead and set up an account and enter in a card info. If you're not sure which SCCA Solo class your car belongs in, determining that can wait until later.

    5) Everyone will need to pay online via Motorsportreg. Your payment option will not be charged until the event is over.

    6) There will be a $20 no-show charge applied to your payment option if you register and do not show. Registration can be cancelled without penalty the Monday prior. Registration will close the Wednesday prior.

Items 4, 5, and 6 provide the best mitigation of risk to the club. You know we autocross in rain or shine. This is the Summer in Alabama, it could rain. But if there's rain on the 5 day forecast and most entrants decide not to come to an event that commands the rent that Barber's Proving Ground does, we would lose a significant chunk of our club's wallet, which will put PDX, TT, CR events in jeopardy down-range. (RX and RR chairs can complain to my PMs).

    7) Paddock may be on grass. If you intend on using jacks or jack stands, please bring planks as well. Treat the grassy areas as you would you own. Sorry, poor choice of words. Treat it as you would your significant other's disapproving parent's front yard.
    ...

I compose this out of great hope and optimism that we can have a stellar event here at a phenomenal asphalt pad and afterwards continue to have more! But this asphalt comes at a price that we are not accustomed to paying. Let's do our best to make this happen and I will be more than happy to tell Josh to schedule more.

I really appreciate the work of our solo chairs for getting all this together, as well as everyone else that has contributed. Looking forward to finally racing a little bit again!

None of those items should be an issue to anyone. You need real commitments to put on an event, not "Oh, I feel like driving fast today, let me see if there's an event going on" lol. It's 2017, so everyone should be familiar with buying things online.

#3 -- how nice of them! Are you able to leave the trailer and cones out on course? We would do this in Huntsville, except they'd probably get stolen. lol

I expect you'll have a large showing! Once you get an MSR link and Facebook event going, let us know and we can help advertise it up in Huntsville too.

Please remember the recommended 25ft distance to hard surfaces (curbs etc). The Mustang event did not follow SCCA guidelines.

I don't know who SSS(s) will be for this event, but this was an issue for both John Waight and I at Barber previously. The last thing we want to do is to spend money for the venue and then have have the SSS pull the insurance shutting down the event for safety concerns.

It was rather magnanimous of them. I've asked Clay to do course design, and we're still seeing if we can all be there Friday evening at the same time. If check-in, tech and course layout are the only things needed Saturday morning, I'll be more than happy.

We'll definitely get the word out once the MSR event is created.

Here's the proposed layout for this first event. Clay will fill in the blanks over the main pad, but if we have finish going down this straight, we shouldn't be in jeopardy of wadding our rides up in the ditch.

                    That should work!

Will we have any access to the area in the lower right?

                      Charley,

How about this finish (in Black) instead? Or the alternate one (in Blue) to slow it down a little? Still have fun on the banked turn, but takes the boulders & ditch out of play.

Good ideas. Charley's first drawing is basically a draft of an idea we kicked around at the club meeting. Ultimately the design will be with the Solo Chairs & course designer. Paddock, grid, and access from grid to/from the course are close to what we want.

The area in the lower right is NOT expected to be available for this event.

                          Hey Chris,

Not going to make any promises now, but we were hoping to ease into it for this first event, and cut lose once we have a few under our belts. We'll see what Clay thinks on Friday night.

added supplemental rule 7, since we'll likely be using grass for paddock:

                            7) Paddock may be on grass. If you intend on using jacks or jack stands, please bring planks as well.

The blue line on the right is too close to the curb and drop off. Also the exit from the banked turn is awkward and most of our clubs issues with incidents have been finish related. The banked turn before the finish is asking for trouble. My .02$.
