  • Poll: STM class for 2016

Maybe a little late for this, but is anyone interested in Street Tire Modified as a catch-all class? Run what you brung on 200 TW tires, no PAX multiplier?

This is where almost everyone running XP really fits. Seems like a good idea to me, and helps those who run it elsewhere have a familiar place to play.

      What exactly are the requirements?

It is a catch-all class that is very popular in many regions. I think it's basically any street legal car on minimum 200TW tires. It is not a pax class...fastest raw time wins like any other official class...and for overall purposes the STM pax factor is 1.0

I was planning on running r-comps on the Hozda Mianda when it is done, but I would keep it on street tires to run STM.

I voted no. To me, it seems we have too many classes that are underrepresented as is and this new class would dilute existing class size potential. Of the 16 classes that had enough participation to qualify for trophies last year, nearly half, 7 had just one driver qualify.

STM will kill our XP and the PAX is brutal.

This is why we try to lower the barrier of entry. Having a catch-all street tire class where the allowed modifications are pretty much unrestricted has the potential to bring in plenty of folks who otherwise wouldn't come to play. But I'm coming from STR where there's rarely too few people to knock me off a podium

I think the Spitfire is the only actual XP car we have. Everyone else already runs there as a catch-all for head's up competition. In other words we use XP as "STM + r-comps (if desired)". To me, offering STM simply allows these folks to move to a class that is not only more appropriate but also consistent with what's offered in neighboring regions.

PAX is only meaningful for true national classes. STM has few rules & is regional-only. Therefore it's PAX multiplier is appropriate at 1.0 to keep it from disrupting "real" PAX results. STM participants know up front that they aren't playing for PAX. They have to move to their national class if they want to do that.

I understand Steve's concern about under-represented classes, but the result could be a large STM field and fewer one car classes.

My swapped Miata should be an actual XP car as long as it is on R-comps, but STM would be more cost effective for me.

If STM is an actual catch-all class and XP is run as intended, then we are in closer agreement with the rules.

Would it be appropriate to run my 7 in STM on 200 TW tires? Or would I still belong in Modified? I'm going to be placing an order for new tires any day now and this would help me decide what tire to go with.

Looks like we will have a STM class this year. The supplemental rules have been updated with the requirements for the class.

I believe you could run either with 200 TW tires. I guess it depends on where you want a trophy though!
