Hello everyone I'm interested in taking part in the upcoming Solo event to see what it's all about. Reading through the forum I see they now have a sound restriction of 96db. I don't know how loud that is or if my car will break that barrier or not. How stringent is the sound restriction going to be in forced at the next event since it's at Barber's? My car has mid lengths, no cats & a Corsa cat back. So we aren't talking open headers or anything.

Our sound equipment has been sent in for its annual recertification prior to our club race at Barber at the end of August. We will not be measuring sound at the Barber autocross but will let you know if we feel there is a problem. You're correct that bad PR due to obnoxiously loud cars isn't much of a concern since we will be at an active racetrack this time, and this event is in conjunction with the Saleen club so we will have lots of visitors with v8s, so this may be a good first event for you. We will be monitoring sound levels and working with anyone we think is over the limit, especially if our starters think someone is too loud.

Always keep in mind, if someone as a car owner thinks their own car might be "a little loud", odds are good it may be pushing the limit

Ok thanks, I def see the concerns with wanting to keep the noise at a certain level. I feel my car will be pushing the limit but I'd like to try out the sport and see if it's something I want to get into before I modify my car any. If it's in violation I'll Def get something done before future events.

I doubt it's loud enough. 96db is loud as hell, like, wtf were you thinking when you put that exhaust together loud. Like, you're not getting any more power by being louder, kind of exhaust.

I see decibel meter apps out there for smart phones that could give you a very approximate reading.

Yeah, the last time I talked to Michael, I secretly recorded his voice on an iPhone decibel app and he was 93 decibels. So they seem to b accurate

If you daily drive this car and don't have noticeable hearing loss after a good pull onto the highway, chances are that you're good. I got a friend, who had recently purchased a miata, into autocross. His exhaust consisted of a 2.5 pipe from the manifold to a blown out resonator and a muffler which was only there for show. Riding in that car without a helmet on actually hurt. Wide open throttle could be heard echoing off nearby hills. He got dirty looks from people in lifted trucks. I am told he technically made it below the 100db limit that day.

He replaced the resonator, lost no HP, and it now sounds fantastic. Still has a janky hood though...

He only made it under 100dB because it wasn't on throttle when he went by the meter

Regardless, it is fixed now and it will fo sho get quieter when he puts a cat in it (along with an oem steering wheel) to help him jump down a class. A 1.6 with the vlsd is in STR IIRC.....

There's a chance steering wheels will be open in the future of ST classes, so tell him not to throw away what he's got if he likes it. It was proposed in the August Fasttrack to allow changes as long as the wheel + adapters weighed the same as the stock wheel.

Duly noted, but it is likely that his little adapter and aluminum wheel are lighter than the one with airbags and such.
